A Vicksburg man, described by friends and family as “outgoing” and “humorous,” was killed early Saturday in a one-vehicle wreck about seven miles east of Port Gibson.
John Nelson, 27, 6655 Jeff Davis Road, was returning from a deer camp in Port Gibson when his vehicle ran off Willows Road, said Claiborne County Coroner J.W. Mallett.
“We do not know how he went off the road, nor do we know the circumstances,” he said. “Someone who was on their way to work, saw him and called it in.”
Mallett arrived on the scene at about 3:30 a.m., but said he was unsure when the one-vehicle wreck occurred.
Nelson, a native of Campbellsville, Ky., moved to Vicksburg in 1999. He was a welder at Ergon Refinery, where he had worked for the past six months.
Nelson was a person who “made everybody laugh,” said his sister-in-law Davina Muirhead.
Nelson is survived by his wife, Tania Nelson, and his 6-year-old daughter, Sierra Nelson, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Jimmie Nelson Jr., of Campbellsville; his parents, Wanda and Jimmie Lee Nelson of York, S.C.; his paternal grandmother, Edna Nelson of Campbellsville; his maternal grandparents, Edna and Les Lawson of Campbellsville and Vernon Nash Tungate of Greensburg, Ky.
Fisher Funeral Home will have charge of arrangements.
Nelson’s sister-in-law Theresa Haggard said the love and friendship Nelson gave will not go unnoticed.
“John never met a stranger. He made friends wherever he went. He loved his wife and his little girl unconditionally,” she said. “He will be missed.”
