Family pet fled after wreck, still running scared off I-20|[01/24/07]

Daisy’s world changed Dec. 26 when she and her owners were in a wreck on Interstate 20 West near Vicksburg.
They were on the way home to Texas from Christmas holidays in North Carolina and now, five weeks later, Daisy is reportedly still here.
The 3-year-old mixed breed dog fled the wreck and has been seen wandering the woods between U.S. 80 and I-20.
“If somebody can get their hands on her, we’ll jump in the car immediately and come get her,” said her owner, Brandon Miller, 30, by phone from Denton, about 400 miles west of Vicksburg.
Miller and his wife, Kym, 24, were not seriously injured when their SUV overturned near the U.S. 61 North exit. Nor were the other “family members” – dogs Daisy, Trooper and Summer.
But while Trooper and Summer hung close to their owners, the chaos of the accident frightened Daisy, causing her to make a break for it into the woods.
“We couldn’t find her, and we’ve been back two weekends since then and just parked our car in the median, waiting for her to come, but she never did,” Miller said.
He said he knows she’s been fed and is doing well because he’s gotten phone calls about her as recently as Tuesday.
“She’s just out of her element and won’t come to anyone she doesn’t know,” he said. “But I’m hoping someone who maybe has been feeding her and has gained her trust can get her close enough to get her and hold her until we can get there.”
Law enforcement and area residents have been on the lookout for Daisy, too, Miller said.
“We have no connection with Vicksburg except with these kind people we’ve met who want to help us,” Miller said. “We’ve been doing everything we can including running ads in the paper and, announcing this on the local radio; I have been sending messages to all Vicksburg residents that have MySpace accounts, as well as hanging tons of fliers in the area.”
“The problem is there’s not a leash law there, so a lot of people who have seen her wandering around probably just think she’s a neighborhood dog,” Miller said.
Vicksburg does have a law requiring that pets be on their owners’ property or leashed, but it is not stringently enforced. Warren County has no leash requirement.
Capt. Kenny Pugh of the Culkin Volunteer Fire Department said his men have spent hours looking for Daisy.
“We’ve searched up and down that highway, and we’ve seen her several times. She just won’t let us get close enough to get her,” he said.
Pugh said the other two dogs in the wreck were kept at Culkin while Miller and his wife were treated at the hospital.
“We’ll be more than willing to keep Daisy if someone needs us to until they can come get her,” he said.
“She’s just traumatized from the accident,” he said. “I would be, too, if I was slammed in a wreck like that. But we’re not giving up hope on her.”
Pugh said the firefighters and members of the Vicksburg Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Department have gone “beyond the call of duty” to try to reunite Daisy with the Millers.
“That’s the goal of being a volunteer firefighter,” he said. “You take care of the public, and they’ll take care of you.”
In the meantime, Miller said he greatly appreciates the kindness he’s been shown by Vicksburgers.
“She’s a real sweet dog, and she’s a part of our family. We want her back,” he said.
