Lady Flashes fall short of playoff berth|[01/26/07]

St. Aloysius’ seventh-grade goal keeper Robin Cooper got to just about every one of the shots by St. Andrew’s in Thursday night’s game at Balzli Field.

The one she didn’t was one anyone would have had a hard time stopping. Oliva Long’s high arching shot from 40 yards out 11 minutes deep into the game turned out to be the only goal scored in the Lady Saints’ 1-0 win.

The victory sends St. Andrew’s to the Class 1A-3A playoffs while St. Aloysius (9-8-2) will be done following tonight’s road game at Greenville-Weston.

&#8220We really wanted this one bad,” said St. Al senior striker Taylor George, who took the brunt of a lot of physical play from the Lady Saints.

&#8220I’m the one they choose to pick on but I can’t get the calls,” George said.

Two minutes deep into the second half, George gave the Lady Flashes their best chance at tying the game. It was one of the few times St. Al was able to get behind the St. Andrew’s defense. George was able to send an accurate cross to the middle, where Mary Beth Croisdale was in front for the header.

St. Andrew’s keeper Savannah McDonald held on to the header despite momentarily bobbling it.

St. Andrew’s (8-6-3) then reeled off six straight shots with Cooper making five saves while the other went wide.

&#8220Robin did great,” George said.

In the 13th minute, George drew a yellow card for rough play but got no such call 12 minutes later when Catherine Thomas used a double-elbow take down of George. That play came a minute after St. Andrew’s Krissy Ford was yellow carded.

&#8220The game had a playoff feel to it,” St. Andrew’s coach Mike Matter said. &#8220We defended well. We just had a problem finishing on the other end.”

&#8220I counted three or four times when they took Taylor down, including one time in the box,” added St. Al coach Karen Carroll. &#8220But overall it was a good game by us. Robin did great. The one goal, no one could’ve stopped. They shift a defender from the other side and she pops a 40-yarder that goes in.”

St. Andrew’s had six more shots in the final 12 minutes but Cooper, who finished with 17 saves, stopped them all. She had some good help from defenders Geena Nellis and Marie Booth who stopped a pair of point blank shots in the 31st minute.

St. Andrew’s ended with 24 shots on goal to just six for St. Al.
