Gerald Newton
PORT GIBSON – Gerald Newton died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007, at Hinds County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 76.
Mr. Newton was born in Cleveland, Miss., and was a retired plumber and pipefitter. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Mary W. Newton of Greenville; and a stepdaughter, Elizabeth High of Benoit.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson with the Rev. Mike Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
Ethel O’Neill Salzer
METAIRIE, La. – Ehtel O’Neill Salzer died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007. She was 70.
Mrs. Salzer was a native of Vicksburg and a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy. She attended Marymount College in New York and received her bachelor of art from Loyola University and a master’s degree in history from the University of New Orleans. Mrs. Salzer taught school in Metairie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Cyril O’Neill and Anna Mae Hennessey O’Neill of Vicksburg.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel J. Salzer of Metairie; a daughter, Ellen Salzer Horak of Cleveland; a son, Jeffrey D. Salzer of Metairie; a brother, Dr. J. Neil O’Neill of Palmetto, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Lamana-Fallo Funeral Home chapel in Metairie.
Charlsie Gooden Williams
Charlsie Gooden Williams died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at Covenant Health and Rehab. She was 90.
Mrs. Williams was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Choctaw, Ark. She married Grady Lee Williams June 19, 1937, in Kennett, Mo., and they moved to Vicksburg in 1944.
Mrs. Williams was a retired nurse who worked at The Street Clinic as office nurse for Dr. Augustus Street until his death, and was office nurse for Dr. Thomas Mitchell. Her caring and sympathetic nature made her a beloved nurse by many.
She was a lifelong devout member of Vicksburg Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She loved her family and church family. Attending church and that fellowship was a very important part of her life. She was a thoughtful and caring role model who was an inspiration to those who knew her.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents, Phosia Gooden and James Blye Gooden; her husband of 66 years, Grady Williams, who died in July 2003; a brother, Boyce Gooden; and a sister, Virginia McFadden.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara O’Connor and her husband, Dr. R.D. O’Connor of Jacksonville, Fla., and Patsy Faulk and her husband, John A. Faulk Jr. of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Kimberly King of Jacksonville, Kena Faulk of New Orleans, Leigh Easterday of Greer, S.C., John Faulk III of Vicksburg and Colleen Selvage of Jacksonville; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Funeral Home chapel with Paul Walden, minister of Vicksburg Church of Christ, and Scott Reiber of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Reggie Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at from 10 a.m. Monday until the hour of service.
Pallbearers will be Clyde Redmon, Calvin Seyforth, Carl Finney, Jerry Miller, Patrick Smith, Roy Wade, Stan Woodson, Ken Whittington and Bendel White.
Honorary pallbearers will be Helen and Chestley Nash, Amy and Carroll Foote, Betty and Hugh Allen, Dot and Phares Griffin, Joyalene Toler Carter, Dorothy and Jerry Goings, Joyalene Oakes, Frances Sibley, Thelma Leist, Bessie Smith, Gladys Thornton, Peggy O’Connor, Lynn Campbell, Joe Durst, Dr. Lee Giffin, Russell Barnes, Mary Jane Haddock, Wade Hammack and the caring staff at Covenant Health and Rehab.

Eugenia Cortez Wright
JACKSON – Eugenia Cortez Wright died Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. She was 76.
Mrs. Wright was a native of Chatham, Miss., and lived in Vicksburg. She was a member of Triumph Church and participated in the nursing home and prayer ministries.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Vunie Stokes Fisher Sr.; her daughter, Vunie Tabitha Wright; a son, William H. Fisher Jr.; and a sister, Lillie Ophelia Fisher.
Survivors include her husband, Charlie L. Wright of Vicksburg; eight sons, Jimmy Wright of Hattiesburg, Bill Wright of Green Cove Spring, Fla., Barry P. Wright of Roanoake, Texas, Tom J. Wright of Clairmore, Okla., Paul Wright of Brookhaven, Toney Wright of Macedonia, Ohio, Byron K. Wright of Vicksburg and Pat Wright of Stockbridge, Ga.; four daughters, Sharlot Jeane Wright of Lumberton, Grace Roslyn Elshorbgy of Senoia, Ga., Delilah D. Gullett of Vicksburg and Donna Probst of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two sisters, Peggy Sue Nicholson of Leland and Linda Gail Dixion of Pearl; 34 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Triumph Church with Norman Hartshorn, Mike Fields and Raymond Mizelle officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Fisher Funeral Home in charge. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 Monday night at the church.
Pallbearers will be Bill Wright, Tony Wright, Tom Wright, Byron Wright, Paul Wright and Pat Wright.
Honorary pallbearers will be Claude Wright Sr., Dewey Wright and Wayne Coleman.
