Vicksburg’s Maxey medals at prestigious Lewis meet|[02/01/07]

Four Vicksburg High School track athletes got to run in one of the nation’s most prestigious indoor meets last week in Houston, Texas.

Gator sprinters Marlon Maxey, Cordell Watkins, LeKendrick Walker and Eddie Sanders ran in the Carl Lewis High School Invitational held at the University of Houston.

Maxey, a sophomore, made an impressive showing, winning a bronze medal in the 60-meter dash. The four Gators went to the meet as members of the Mississippi Heat Track Club coached by Clarence Maxey of Vicksburg.

&#8220This is one of the best meets in the country and we plan on going to one more for the indoor season,” Clarence Maxey said. &#8220We’ll be going to the Southern Indoor Championships at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in the last week of February.”

At the Carl Lewis Meet, Marlon Maxey finished in the top three out of 200 competitiors in the 60 meters. He was ninth out of 150 sprinters in the 200 meter dash.

Watkins was eighth in the 60 dash and 12th in the 200 meters. Walker ran in both the 60 and 200 meters while Sanders ran in the 400-meter dash. The Lewis meet featured sprinters from Texas, Missouri, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Maxey said his club is affiliated with AAU and the Junior Olympics. They primarily compete during the summer going to as many as six meets in a season.

&#8220Our goal is to qualifiy for the Louisiana regionals. We run most of our meets in Louisiana,” Clarence Maxey said.
