And then there’s some chocolate
Hearts, candy, cards. They all say Valentine’s Day to the 26 students in Jennifer Danczyk’s second-grade class at Beechwood Elementary who were as busy as bees this morning filling bags with treats.
Eight-year-old Jackson Oaks, who delivered sports-themed Valentine cards to his classmates, said the day is a chance to have some fun and showcase love.
“It means, well, I don’t really know, but it may kind of mean sharing with your families and showing how much you love them,” he said.
His classmate, Kate Shelton, said the holiday, celebrated every year on this day, is a reason to celebrate “friendship and loving.” She did just that with her valentines, and their removable tattoos.
For 7-year-old Jared Honeycutt, Valentine’s Day is all about the one he loves.
“Valentine’s means you give your heart to somebody that you like,” he said.
For him, it’s his mother.
“I haven’t gotten her anything yet this morning,” he said. “Maybe I’ll give her a heart of candy.”
His classmate, 8-year-old Darrell Johnson, said he has a girlfriend.
“I gave her a ring and some earrings and some chocolate,” he said.
And, while student Colt Norris doesn’t have a girlfriend, he wrote in a paragraph about Valentine’s Day that his favorite thing about the holiday was “meeting girls.”
“It’s just fun,” he said.
But, the true meaning of Valentine’s Day to him is helping others and caring, he said.
Earlier in the month Danczyk and her assistant, Melanie Jones, had the students write paragraphs explaining what the holiday means to them. Six were chosen to be placed on a bulletin board in the hallway.
