Harry M. Chester

Harry M. Chester died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at Covenant Health and Rehab in Vicksburg. He was 80.

Born in Eden, Miss., Mr. Chester had been a resident of Vicksburg for the past 50 years. A retired employee of Westinghouse Inc., he served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church.

He is survived by two nephews, James D. Chester and Danny Ray Chester, both of Vicksburg; two great-nephews; and other relatives, including Mary M. Chester of Vicksburg.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City with the Rev. Clyde Pullen officiating. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg.

Harrison Louis Cox Sr.

NEW ORLEANS – Harrison Louis &#8220Harry” Cox Sr. died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans. He was 63.

Mr. Cox was a member of the Bright Morning Star M.B. Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, McKinley Cox Sr., his mother, Fannie Rebecca Cook Cox, five brothers, two sisters and a son.

He is survived by six sons, Harry Louis Cox Jr. of Memphis and Jonathan Cox, Jessie McGruder, Kenneth McGruder, Horace Becks and William Becks, all of Vicksburg; eight daughters, Elizabeth Cox Cosby, Marilyn Jean Cox Graves, Carmen Becks, Velma Becks, Ebony Cox, Vanessa Becks, Carolyn Becks and Kelly Cox, all of Vicksburg; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and others including members of the Cox, Strong, Jackson, Harris, Connor and Studdard families.

W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Frances L. Gilchrist

Frances L. Gilchrist died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at her home. She was 101.

Mrs. Gilchrist was born on July 14, 1905, in Churchill, Miss., as Frances Brown. She was one of 10 children born to her parents. She was married to the late Martin Gilchrist Sr. for 73 years. The couple moved to Vicksburg around 1959 and later joined Jackson Street M.B. Church, where she served on the mother board for many years. She remained faithful at the church until her death. She was well-known for her wisdom and assistance to others. She was a member of Good Neighbor Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Gilchrist Sr.; her parents, Alfred and Clara Brown; two sons, Martin Gilchrist Jr. and Charles Gilchrist; a daughter, Florida M. Anderson; and five brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by seven daughters, Pearl Smith and Ophelia Brown, both of Vicksburg, Runnie V. Dawson of Kansas City, Mo., Ruby Draper of Akron, Ohio, Cubie Smith of Bryan, Texas, Margie B. Gilchrist of Chicago and Clara Gilchrist of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Gilchrist of Columbus, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Marie Smith of Los Angeles; 29 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Street M.B. Church with the Rev. John Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 tonight at Williams Funeral Service.

James Vess Hendrix

PIONEER, La. – James Vess Hendrix died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at Richland Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Delhi. He was 90.

Born in Ouachita Parish, Mr. Hendrix was the son of the late James Andrew Hendrix and Ann Jane Wink Hendrix.

He had lived and farmed near Pioneer most of his life.

Mr. Hendrix was preceded in death by his wife, Eris D. Yates Hendrix; and two grandchildren, Andy Henson and Lisa Neil Hendrix; and brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a son, Floyd Hendrix of Pioneer; three daughters, Mildred Miller of Transylvania, Margie Hendricks of Monroe and Lou Jarratt of Delhi; a brother, Henry Hendrix of Pioneer; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 today at Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Delhi with the Revs. Don Thornton and Todd Perry officiating. Burial will follow at Epps Cemetery.

Michael Farrell Lowery

Services for Michael Farrell Lowery were at 10:30 this morning at Cane Ridge Cemetery in Lorman with the Rev. Billy Brumfield officiating.

Visitation was from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home

Mr. Lowery died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2007, at his home. He was 32.

Born and raised in Vicksburg, Mr. Lowery attended Warren Central High School, Hinds Junior College and the National Hardwood Lumber School in Memphis, Tenn.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

He was a past employee of Anderson-Tully Lumber Company, where he worked as a lumber inspector.

Mike was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed amateur taxidermy. His presence will be missed by all that knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Warene Nations.

He is survived by his parents, Odis Jr. and Sherry Lowery; a sister, Teasha Lowery Brewer and her husband, David, of Vicksburg; paternal grandparents, Odis and Rosa Lowery of Vicksburg; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Nations Sr. of Vicksburg; a niece, Brittany Brewer of Vicksburg; uncles, Ricky Lowery of Vicksburg and Wilbur Nations Jr. of Natchez; and an aunt, Dean Hampton of Vicksburg.

Pallbearers were Ricky Lowery, Buddy Hampton, David Brewer, Adam Caruthers, Tom &#8220Tac” Caruthers and Jeff Caruthers.

Honorary pallbearer was Wilbur Nations Jr.

Memorial may be made to Hawkins United Methodist Church at 3736 Halls Ferry Road, Vicksburg, MS 39180.

Willie Williams Stelivan

Services for Willie Williams &#8220Billy” Stelivan will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Living Word Baptist Church, 260 Mississippi 27. Burial will follow at Second Union M.B. Church Cemetery in Utica. Visitation will be from 2 until 6 tonight at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and from noon Saturday until the hour of service at the church.

Mr. Stelivan died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Promise Specialty Hospital. He was 74.

A retired brick layer, Mr. Stelivan was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Isom and Nancy Stelivan; two brothers, Joseph Stelivan and Everitt C. Stelivan; and a sister, Anna East.

He is survived by two sons, John Neal and Elijah Neal, both of Gary, Ind.; five daughters, Deolia Barnes of St. Louis, Mo., Susan Ella Johnson of Joliet, Ill., Starlene Richardson and Ethel Bowlings, both of Gary, Ind., and Nancy Wilester Stelivan of Vicksburg; a brother, Elbert Lee Stelivan of Vicksburg; a sister, Alberta Anderson of Detroit; 22 grandchildren, 28 grandchildren and other relatives.

Addie Warren

Addie Warren died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg. She was 100.

Ms. Warren was a homemaker. She was a member of Grove Street Baptist Church, where she served as mother of the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Warren and Nora Warren.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Grove Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Casey Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
