Purvis C. Garrett Jr.
MADISON – Purvis C. “Boots” Garrett Jr. died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. He was 77.
A native of Crystal Springs, Mr. Garrett had been a Madison resident for 29 years. He was past master of Circle Lodge 638 and a member for more than 50 years of the IBEW. He had worked more than 38 years for Mississippi Power & Light Co. in various capacities.
He was a charter member, deacon and building overseer of Old Rice Road Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Purvis Clarence and Annie Vera Sharp Garrett; a son, Purvis C. Garrett III; three sisters, June Everets, Beth Pickering and Bobbie Drozda; and one grandchild.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Katherine Slay Garrett of Madison; one son, Bruce Edward Garrett of Brookhaven; two daughters, Glenda Bruce of Cleveland and Kathy Jones of Vicksburg; a sister, Dot Scruggs of Ridgeland; a brother, Mike Garrett of Houston, Texas; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Old Rice Road Baptist Church. Burial will be at Natchez Trace Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 until 9 tonight at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland and Sunday at the church from 1 p.m. until the service.
Memorials may be made to Circle Lodge 638, Old Rice Road Baptist Church or Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Charles D. Hall
WEST ALTON, Mo. – Charles D. Hall died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Jackson. He was 56.
Born in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Homer Junior Hall and Claudette Fannie Tillman Hall.
A resident of West Alton for the past 30 years, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was a crane operator for Ryerson Steel Company. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, FOE 254, in West Alton, American Legion Post 44 in Florissant, Mo., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Boleware; and a brother, Jerry Hall.
He is survived by three daughters, Christine Hall and Crystal Hall, both of St. Charles, Mo., and Kelly Hall of West Alton; one son, David Hall of West Alton; three sisters, Judy McCammon and Betty Bulluck, both of Vicksburg, and Barbara White of Corine, Ark.; one grandchild; and his fiance, Lana Tuck of West Alton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Dunaway, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Collins Cemetery in Houlka, Miss.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service.
Gloria Jean Pierce Jernigan
DETROIT – Gloria Jean Pierce Jernigan, formerly of Vicksburg, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, in Detroit. She was 63.
A resident of Detroit, Mrs. Jernigan was employed with the Chrysler Corporation, Mack Stamping Plant and Academy of Detroit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luella and Robert Pierce Sr.; and three sisters, Mary Jane Hopkins, Shirley Pierce and Deloris Leggett.
She is survived by a son, Carlos Judge of Redford, Mich.; two brothers, the Rev. Charles Pierce of Del Rio, Texas, and Robert Pierce Jr. of Vicksburg; and other relatives and friends.
Services were at 11 a.m. Feb. 17, 2007, at Cantrell Funeral Home in Detroit with Elder Malcolm Jessup officiating. Burial followed at Detroit Memorial Park in West Redford.
