A Vicksburg fireman and policeman ran into a burning apartment building late Friday night to save an infant trapped inside.

The men rescued Quinterius Dorsey, the 2-month-old son of Khadera Dorsey, who was visiting a resident of the complex at 1203 Second North St., said Deputy Chief Rose Shaifer of the Vicksburg Fire Department. Quinterius was treated and released from River Region Medical Center, a spokesman said.

When officials arrived at the fire, around 11 p.m., they were told that a baby had been left inside on the first floor. The fire was believed to have started on the second floor of the complex, said firefighter Lt. Jeff Cockrell, who was on the scene. The fire was directly above the apartment where the baby was found.

Officer Stephen Scott of the Vicksburg Police Department said he didn’t think twice about rescuing the baby.

&#8220Somebody said the baby was still inside,” he said. &#8220I didn’t hesitate. I just went.”

He said the women who had been inside the apartment told him that the reason the baby was left behind was that they each had a baby in their arms.

Capt. Randy Rippy of the Vicksburg Fire Department went in behind Scott, who handed him the sleeping baby. Rippy then took the baby, who he said &#8220was barely a handful” outside and handed him off to emergency officials, who took him to River Region.

&#8220I was just doing what I was supposed to do,” Rippy said. &#8220That’s what we train for. That’s what we do.”

No other injuries were reported and firefighters reported the fire was out, and the scene was cleared at 1:03 a.m., Shaifer said.

The fire was the second at a home in Vicksburg in two days. On Friday morning, 42-year-old Robert John Sutherland died in a blaze at his home at 112 Bottino Drive.
