Bullpen costs Hinds a victory|[03/09/07]

It was a picture perfect day for the opening of the Wes Cliburn Baseball Classic at Bazinsky Field. But it was a downright ugly day for the Hinds Community College bullpen.

Four Eagle relievers combined to blow a 7-0 lead over two innings and Bossier Parish won it in the eighth on a two-run homer by Adam Mile for a 10-8 decision.

This was not the way Hinds coach Sam Temple wanted his Eagles to start this four-day showcase event in his hometown.

&#8220That’s the first time we’ve done that all year,” Temple said of his bullpen’s collapse. &#8220We’re a young team and we’re still trying to find the pieces. Pitching wise, we needed some guys to step up.

&#8220The real shame is that we got a great ball game from our starter in Brandon Martin. His pitch count had gotten up, so we took him out after five (innings). You wish you had a crystal ball to tell you, you should’ve left him in, but we went to some relievers who have been good for us,” Temple said.

&#8220Today wasn’t their day.”

No, it wasn’t. Jack Craven, who earned a save Tuesday against Gulf Coast, didn’t get any of the four batters he faced out. Three hits, including a two-run homer by Larry Stewart, and a walk jumpstarted the Cavaliers’ comeback.

All four of Craven’s runners came home to make it 7-4.

Hinds got what appeared to be some insurance when Jess Shelby singled in Corey Stevens with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

But no lead was safe for the Eagles. Chris Farris, who got the Eagles out of the Bossier sixth, couldn’t do it in the seventh. He gave up two straight hits and a walk to load the bases.

Temple turned to closer Daniel Cowart, but he immediately got a pop up that got lost in the sun and fell to the ground. Shortstop Josh Gordon, a Warren Central product, picked up the ball and gunned down Kevin Smith at third, but a run also scored.

Cowart struck out his next man and was a strike away from ending it, getting Matt Fontenot in a 1-2 hole. Cowart, however, missed badly on his next two pitches and issued a gift-wrapped walk to reload the bases.

Jared Dysart then singled hard to left, scoring two to make it 8-7. That was all for Cowart.

Next up was Matt Welch, who on a 1-0 pitch, balked in Fontenot with the tying run to make it 8-8. On the next pitch, Welch got Kyle Lawrence to ground out to Warren Central graduate Jonathan Ettinger at second base.

Hinds went down in order in the seventh. Welch got two out in the eighth before surrendering a double to Smith. Miley then blasted a two-run shot to give Bossier (15-6) its first lead of the day at 10-8.

Cavalier closer Kyle Myers shut the door, getting three straight easy flyouts to end the game.

Bossier coach Aaron Vorachek said the key was the pulling of Martin.

&#8220When they pulled that starter, because he was very good,” Vorachek answered. &#8220He kept us off-balance and we just couldn’t get to him.”

Wabash Valley 4, Hinds 3

Kyle Gutchewsky’s single with two out in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run for Wabash Valley (11-6).

Hinds (9-7) battled back from a 3-1 deficit after five innings to score one run each in the sixth and seventh to tie the game.

Joe Gex’s double in the sixth made it 3-2.
