&#8220The kids have stayed positive all year long, worked hard, and I felt like they showed up to the park with a little something extra,” WC coach Randy Broome said. &#8220We did a lot of things right tonight.”

Indeed they did. The Vikings worked three walks and a hit batsman during a five-run first inning that basically put the game away. Whittington’s two-run double was their only hit during ther rally.

WC tacked on two more runs in the second inning, on an RBI single from Lee and an RBI groundout by Calhoun, then left the bases loaded in the third before salting it away with a seven-run fourth inning.

The Vikings collected six hits in the fourth, including a two-run single by Lee and RBI singles from Calhoun and Matt Traxler. The outburst finally ended when Calhoun’s infield hit scored Lee from third, then Calhoun got caught in a rundown as Heath Carroll came around from second. Calhoun drew a half-dozen throws and kept running until six Greenville players were between first and second base trying to complete the rundown.

Longmire retired the Hornets (4-4, 0-4) quietly in the top of the fifth to end the game by the mercy rule. Charles Hannah did get a one-out single for Greenville, but he was erased on a game-ending double play.
