At Ole Miss, two Henrys are better than one|[03/13/07]

Before the season started, it was clear that Ole Miss would lean on two-year starter Justin Henry for leadership and offensive production.

What wasn’t so clear was the affect the ‘other’ Henry would have on the Rebels.

Jordan Henry is racking up numbers that rival his more seasoned older brother – and the two couldn’t be happier.

They hit 1-2 in the Rebels batting order, play on the same half of the field – Justin at second base and Jordan in right field – look alike, sound alike, have similar batting stances and are producing at an alarming rate.

&#8220It’s pretty special knowing that right after you hit, your brother is coming up,” Jordan said.

Justin leads Ole Miss with a .447 batting average. His 4-for-4 effort on Sunday helped Ole Miss secure its second win in three days against UCLA. He has hit .636 over the last five games and garnered Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors.

In 18 games, Henry has 34 hits – by far the most on the team – and has team-best 15 RBIs, even though he hits in the No. 2 hole which is not exactly a prime spot for RBI leaders.

&#8220It seems like he is getting on base every time he gets up,” Jordan said of his older brother. &#8220I try to get on base so he can bring me around.”

Jordan, the reigning Vicksburg Post Player of the Year, has started 17 of 18 games and moved from low in the order to the leadoff spot. He is second on the team with a .362 average and also is second in hits with 21.

&#8220I can’t say that I thought he would make this big an impact so soon,” Justin said. &#8220I expected him to do well and I knew he was capable of playing well. He is definitely standing out and hopefully it will continue.”

When the brothers do get on base, which is frequent, they are a terror on opposing defenses. The two have combined to steal 9 of 12 bases this season and have scored 19 of the team’s 90 runs.

&#8220Jordan brought a spark to the team because he puts so much pressure on defenses with his speed,” Justin said.

Justin has been a part of the Rebels’ last two Super Regional teams and has been a stalwart in the infield. His only loss this season seems to be the leadoff position in which he had become accustomed to for the past two seasons.

Losing that role to a younger brother, in some cases, would cause strife in the family. But for these two, the only thing that matters is winning.

&#8220We are competitive toward one another, but we have a real good relationship,” Justin said after losing the leadoff role. &#8220It’s not a big deal at all. We’ll do whatever we need to do to win.”

It’s all that mattered in high school where both played for the Vicksburg Gators baseball team and were accomplished tennis players. It’s all that matters now at Ole Miss, and they hope it’s all that matters in the future.

The Rebels begin Southeastern Conference play on Friday at Vanderbilt, the top-ranked team in America.

The road doesn’t get any easier after that.

&#8220We are looking forward to Vanderbilt, facing their top pitchers,” Jordan said. &#8220This is the start of a new level (in the SEC).”
