Mary Clare Scurria can play just about anywhere on the soccer field.
Whether it be offense or defense, she was the motor that made the Lady Vikes go, and led to her being selected as the 2006-07 Vicksburg Post Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Now that her high school career is over, except for an all-star appearance in June, the standout will try to earn a spot with the Mississippi State Bulldogs..
“I want to go to Mississippi State and walk-on,” said Scurria, who planned to play in a showcase tournament with MSU coaches in attendance this weekend.
Scurria said exposure to college programs is limited during the high school season. She is currently playing with the Baton Rouge Soccer Club, an elite Louisiana team.
“I lived in Baton Rouge last summer and played for them then,” Scurria said.
“Playing with the Baton Rouge team hasn’t helped me in Mississippi at all,” she said. “I hounded the coach at Mississippi State to come see me play.”
During her senior season, she led the Lady Vikes with 19 goals and also had seven assists while seeing time at several different positions.
The Lady Vikes missed the playoffs this past season, and that’s something that still sticks in her craw.
“That was a big disappointment,” Scurria said. “But overall, I think we played well and had a good season.”
She said there is certainly room for improvement in her game, but hopes that the more she plays and the better the competition, the more she will excel. She’s been playing soccer since she was 5 years old and the game comes naturally to her.
But there is no sign of getting complacent.
“I’m athletic and fast and I hope that helps me,” Scurria said.
Scurria is the third Warren Central player of the year, joining goalkeepers Emily Coker (2005) and Courtney Hubert (2000).
