Vicksburg completed a rare three-game sweep of archrival Warren Central with an 8-3 win Tuesday night at Bazinsky Field.
The Gators (13-9, 5-3) won behind a good outing from left-handed ace Stanton Price and got enough key hits to beat the Vikings for the seventh time in the last nine meetings.
Price, now 6-2 on the season, struck out nine in six innings of work. He allowed only one earned run that coming off a solo home run by Heath Carroll. Carroll’s fifth inning shot was the first home run this season for the Vikings (5-18, 3-6).
“I left that pitch up for him,” Price said. “Heath’s a good hitter. The next time he came up, I had to concentrate more.”
When Carroll came back to bat in the top of the sixth inning, he had two on with two out in a 7-3 game. He had doubled off Price in the previous at-bat before his home run. But this time, Price won the battle, using a sharp 1-2 fastball to fan Carroll with two Viking runners in scoring position.
“That was a big spot and Stanton battled back to get him,” VHS coach Jamie Creel said. “It was not a bad game for Stanton. I just thought he threw too many pitches.”
Price’s longest innings of work were the third and sixth, where the Gators made two errors each to give the Vikings more outs to play with.
The Vikings had a fair game defensively, making only three errors, with two of those coming on overthrows on stolen base attempts. WC coach Randy Broome trotted out a new lineup with Chris Whittington behind the plate, sophomore Adam Lee at third and Cody Barfield at short.
“Like I said before, we’re just trying to get back on the field and get better with each game,” Broome said. “Tonight, Stanton threw well but we were at least able to make it close. We started Heath on the mound and he’s a relief guy, but he gave us two good innings before he tired. Then Oscar (Jonathan Longmire) came out and did well until he gave out of gas.”
Carroll, who pitched two scoreless innings to begin the game, ran into trouble in the Gator third inning.
Trailing 2-0, the Gators got a leadoff walk from Tanner Woodson and Mims executed a hit-and-run to put two on. Eric Coleman then walked to load the bases for Ole Miss signee Tyler Wells.
Wells fought off a couple of 3-2 offerings before ripping a double down the left field line to score Woodson and Mims to tie the game at 2.
Price followed with a triple to center to score Coleman and Wells for a 4-2 lead. That was all for Carroll. Vernon Wolfe knocked in Price on an RBI grounder off Longmire for a 5-2 lead.
After Carroll’s home run in the fifth, the Gators got two back in the home half of the inning. Coleman walked and scored on a wild pitch while Price’s courtesy runner, Ryan Ferrington, scored on Kurt Cooksey’s two-out hit to left.
The Gators last run came in the sixth when Trey Prentiss led off with a double and then scored on a passed ball.
Vicksburg had eight hits to WC’s six. Wells and Prentiss had two each. Carroll’s two hits paced WC.
