Greenville-Weston doesn’t have many wins against its Division 3-5A rivals in most sports. But in tennis, the Hornets now have a pair.

Greenville’s Diarra Williams won three break points in the third set and defeated Vicksburg High’s Donald Brown to give the Hornets a 3-2 match win Thursday afternoon at the Halls Ferry Park courts. Greenville had beaten Warren Central 3-2 in a match earlier this season.

Williams won the deciding match against Brown 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. He rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the last five games in the match.

&#8220My forehand started to get lazy and I just burned out there in the last set,” Brown said. &#8220He got aggressive by coming to the net.”

Down 2-5, Brown tried to rally with his serve but Williams won the last two points by coming to the net and smashing winners.

VHS coach Kevin Manton, though, liked what we saw out of his young player who is being called on to replace a perennial state contender in the graduated Jordan Henry, who now starts for the Ole Miss baseball team.

&#8220He took a pretty good player, who’s unbeaten in the division, to three sets,” Manton said. &#8220This is only his second match but I’m proud of the gains he’s made in that time.”

Vicksburg (3-4) picked up two points on the girls side. Christine Figueroa did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 romp. Catherine Figueroa and Grace Ga-as won in straight sets in doubles, as well.

Greenville (4-3) bounced back by taking mixed doubles over Vicksburg’s Matthew Campbell and Heather Baker 6-2, 6-4.

The Hornets’ boys doubles pair, Louis Thomas and Jeffrey Suber, evened the team match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bryan and Ryan Fisher.

First-year Greenville coach Cindy Flanagan credits having experienced boys as a key to the Hornets’ surge in tennis.

&#8220We’ve got some good experienced players. Three of my boys are seniors. It also helps that their parents play tennis, so they know the game,” Flanagan said.

The other two teams in Division 3-5A also played Thursday at Halls Ferry. Madison Central (4-8) blanked Warren Central 5-0.

&#8220We still have some problems with our singles but I think our doubles teams can hang with them,” WC coach Rick Shields said.

The Vikings’ (4-5) girls doubles pair of Caitlin Shelton and Kerrie-Taylor Leech took Madison to three sets before falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The Vikings’ boys doubles team of Nick Melby and Steven Faust has played well all season but Madison moved in its No. 1 boys singles player to play doubles on Thursday. The Jaguars’ Jacob Womack and Spencer Turnbull won 6-1, 6-0. MC’s Brent Chancellor and Ashley Evans took the mixed doubles 6-2, 6-3 along with both singles matches.

All four teams will be back in Vicksburg on April 18 for the division tournament.
