It’s probably a good thing Porters Chapel Academy doesn’t commemorate its district championships with signs or banners on the outfield fence.
At the rate the Eagles are going, they’d run out of room in a hurry.
Michael Busby allowed one hit and struck out six in four innings, Cody Ferguson hit a three-run homer, and PCA dispatched Riverfield 12-0 Thursday to wrap up its sixth district title in seven seasons.
PCA has made the MPSA playoffs every year since 1999 and, with the exception of last year’s state title season, has won its district every year since 2001.
“It’s a goal. It’s one of our smaller goals, but it’s one of the ones along the way to our ultimate goal, which is a state championship,” PCA coach Randy Wright said.
PCA (27-2, 9-1 District 4-AA) has won 58 of its last 60 district games, including nine of 10 this season, and it wasn’t hard to see Thursday why they’re the best team in their district again this year.
Busby allowed only a double to Logan Moore in the first inning, then no more hits the rest of the game. At the plate, he also had one of four consecutive RBI singles for PCA during an eight-run second inning that blew the game open.
Brady Towne started the inning with a double, Cole Smith followed with a single and Spencer Pell reached on an error to put PCA ahead 2-0. Then Robbie Simms, Busby, Moose Carney and Hayden Hales all singled to plate four more runs. Ferguson capped the rally with a three-run homer that made it 9-0.
Two errors brought in another run for PCA in the third inning, and the Eagles ended the game via the 12-run mercy rule with two more in the bottom of the fourth.
“We’ve got seven ninth-graders out there and we kicked it around. They (PCA) don’t need any help,” said Riverfield (11-12, 1-6) coach Donnie Foster, whose team committed five errors.
PCA 16, Veritas 2
Ferguson went 3-for-3 with three doubles and five RBIs, Matt Cranfield was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBIs and three runs scored, and PCA crushed Veritas. In three meetings this season, PCA has outscored the Lions 41-2.
Busby and Hales also drove in two runs apiece for PCA, and Carney scored three runs.
