Gators win divisional track meet|[04/13/07]

Vicksburg’s Cordell Watkins won the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and anchored the winning 4×100 meter relay team, and Michael Cooper won the 400 meter dash and was part of the winning 4×400 meter relay team as the Gators won the Division 3-5A track championship Thursday at Memorial Stadium.

The Gators totaled 78.5 points, narrowly edging Greenville-Weston’s 78. Madison Central was third, with 64 points, and Warren Central was a distant fourth with 39.5.

WC’s Geroid Chambliss did provide a bright spot, though, winning the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.75 seconds. The Vikings’ 4×200 meter relay team of Quinton Truly, Darius Buck, Monty Jackson and Wesley Armstrong also finished first.

Vicksburg’s Dekores Branch won the discus with a toss of 138 feet, 9 inches, while teammate Delmon Robinson was first in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 6 inches.

In the girls’ meet, Vicksburg’s Courtney Prentiss won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and joined Miniimah Hasain, Jazmine Walker and Stephanie Wright on the winning 4×100 meter relay team. But it wasn’t enough to beat Madison Central, which accumulated six first-place finishes and beat the Missy Gators 86-71 in the team standings.

Chanice Cotton won the 3,200 meter run for VHS with a time of 13 minutes, 18.23 seconds, while Keisha Collins was first in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Vicksburg’s Qua’Shandra Stewart was first in the shot put with a mark of 36 feet.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to next week’s regional meet at Madison Central.
