Warren Central’s season ended with a 72-hour rollercoaster ride. There were cheers when the Vikings beat No. 2 Northwest Rankin on Thursday, tears when they lost a heartbreaker to playoff-bound Clinton on Friday, and finally a whimper when the season finale was rained out.

Shane Bennett’s grand slam keyed a five-run seventh inning rally as Clinton came from behind to beat Warren Central 9-8 on Friday night.

It was to be the first game of a home-and-home series between the teams, but Saturday morning’s storms left Viking Field in an unplayable state. And with the playoffs starting on Thursday, the game will not be made up.

That left the Vikings on a bittersweet high heading into the offseason. After beating Northwest Rankin, they opened an 8-2 lead on Clinton after four innings only to see the Arrows chip away and then win it with the big comeback in the seventh.

It was a microcosm of WC’s season, one in which they were competitive against some of the best teams in Mississippi, but never could seem to pull out a lot of victories.

The Vikings ended the year with a 6-22 record and did not make the postseason for the first time since 2003. Coach Randy Broome was hopeful, though, that the strong showing in the final week would give them a boost heading into the offseason.

&#8220Hopefully it’s something we can build off of during the summer. If we show up, we can beat anybody around,” he said. &#8220We just have to find ways to win, and part of that is on my end.”ved on the ball.

&#8220She was just running with me and didn’t go for the ball,” Franco said.

Both Park and Kerut scored to tie the game at 2-2.

In the seventh, George led with a single to right. Sacrifice bunts by Blair Tillman and pinch-hitter K.K. DeRossette moved George to third.

Fullilove’s 1-0 pitch to Gwin got past catcher Jennifer Parker and George darted home with the winning run.

WC, Vicksburg rained out

The severe weather that ripped across Mississippi early Saturday forced the postponement of the Class 5A fast-pitch softball playoff series between Warren Central and Ocean Springs, and Vicksburg and Tupelo.

The first two games of the best-of-three series between WC and Ocean Springs will be played Monday at 1 p.m. at Warren Central. If a third game is necessary, it will be played Tuesday at Ocean Springs.

Vicksburg and Tupelo will play their series at 3 p.m. Monday at Tupelo. If a Game 3 is necessary, it will be played Tuesday at Bazinsky Park.
