A Vicksburg man, described by family as a “good-hearted person” was killed in a one-vehicle wreck Thursday, four days after the death of his mother, for whom he had moved back to Vicksburg.
Anthony Lee Walls, 37, 2509 Oak St., was helping plan his mother’s funeral. Instead, they’ll have a combined service Saturday.
“He was continuously going and coming,” said his sister, Mary Brown. “You know, you work yourself – or do something.”
Their mother, Irene T. “Precilla” Walls, died at the home she shared with her son Sunday. She was 70. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said Walls was with her at the time, having moved here from Memphis in January.
“He was staying in the hospital with her. He came home to take care of her at home,” Brown said. “He was acting like he was the nurse – giving her whatever care she needed. He said, ‘I got this. I can handle it.’”
Walls was eastbound at Mississippi 27 and U.S. 80 in his mother’s car, negotiating one of Vicksburg’s busiest intersections. Shortly before 6 p.m., said witnesses who saw the accident, he appeared to avoid another motorist who ran a red light, lost control of the white Chevrolet Cavalier and struck a utility pole directly in front of Hillcrest Inn.
“I saw it. The car went airborne,” said Jake Penley, working at a crawfish stand set up just yards away from where the sedan wrapped around the pole. Penley said the other vehicle continued northbound onto the web of interchanges at Interstate 20 and U.S. 61 North.
Walls was killed by the impact, Warren County Deputy Coroner Kelda Bailess said. The cause of the accident was still under investigation, said Mississippi Highway Patrolman Wayne Smith.
Extended family and friends were overcome with grief at the scene, holding up one another.
“We don’t know how we’re doing,” Walls’ sister, Beverly Webb, said this morning at his home, where family gathered.
In addition to Webb and Brown, Walls is survived by a son, 20-year-old Moyati Killian; and two additional sisters, Arlene Walls Johnson and Jacqueline Walker.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary M.B. Church. W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home will handle arrangements, said James Jefferson, funeral director.
East Clay Street becomes U.S. 80 just past YMCA Drive, eventually crossing Mississippi 27 and forming what is commonly referred to as the “Beechwood” or “four-way” intersection. It is an intersection where auto accidents both minor and major are common.
Thursday’s wreck was the fourth fatal wreck in Vicksburg and Warren County in 2007.
