A Florence man is dead and a Vicksburg man faces charges of murder after a stabbing at an all-night restaurant early Saturday.
William Mayer, 36, 101 Hunter Trail, died in surgery at River Region Medical Center at 5:48 a.m., Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said.
Mayer’s death came four hours after the 1:44 a.m. stabbing at the Waffle House at 4045 E. Clay St.
Sgt. Beverly Prentiss of the Vicksburg Police Department said the suspect, Willie Fitzgerald Sanders, 42, 1517 South St., was arrested minutes after the stabbing, which occurred in the doorway of the restaurant.
She said the men apparently did not know each other and one was entering the restaurant and the other was leaving when the stabbing occurred.
“I don’t know what they were arguing about,” she said.
Sanders was arrested in a white Lincoln after being stopped on Clay at Howard Street minutes after the description of his car was broadcast by emergency dispatchers, Prentiss said.
She said a knife was recovered.
Sanders was released from the Warren County Jail on $100,000 bond later Saturday, records showed.
Huskey said an autopsy showed Mayer died “from multiple stab wounds in the chest area,” Huskey said.
The homicide is the first in 2007 in the city and the county. Last year, two were recorded in the city limits, and four were recorded in Warren County.
