Hinds Community College shortstop Josh Gordon hopes a spot in next June’s NJCAA Freshman All-Star game will lead to a prosperous future after he leaves Hinds next year.
Gordon, a former Warren Central product, will play for the West All-Stars in a three-game series that starts June 16 at the USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tenn. The series comes a week after USA Baseball hosts the NJCAA Division II World Series.
“I’m hoping I can play a good game and get some notice from some recruiters,” Gordon said Wednesday. “It’s a four-day trip. We have practice for the first two days (June 13-14) and then play the series over the last two days.”
Hinds coach Sam Temple said the all-star week will be a great showcase for Gordon as it brings together 44 of the nation’s top freshmen players in the junior college ranks.
“This type of an opportunity caps a great freshman year for Josh,” Temple said. “The intent of the series is get to additional exposure for these freshmen. I think it was difficult for us to pick just one of our freshmen, but Josh is certainly deserving.”
Gordon had an impressive year at the plate for the Eagles, batting .404. Nineteen of his 46 hits went for extra bases, including six triples and four home runs. He drove in a team high 35 RBIs.
“It was an all right season,” Gordon said. “It could’ve been better had we made the (MAJCC) playoffs. At least we had the opportunity to make them.”
Hinds finished a game out of earning the second place spot from the Central Division behind Meridian and East Central. East Central went on to win the MAJCC championship. The Eagles ended 27-14 overall.
“I think having more experience will help us next year,” Gordon said. “We were a pretty young team.”
A good outing in Millington, followed by another strong season at Hinds, could position Gordon to join the likes of Warren County’s band of Division I players like Justin and Jordan Henry of Ole Miss, Joey Lieberman at the University of Memphis and current Mississippi State signee Michael Busby and Ole Miss signee Tyler Wells.
