Baseball fans in Vicksburg should have no problem finding games to watch this summer.

From youth leagues to regional tournaments to adult leagues, an abundance of games is scheduled to be played in the city.

For the first time, the city is scheduled to host a tournament every weekend this summer, Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Director Joe Graves said. The influx of out-of-town teams could translate into a boon for the local economy.

On May 19-20, Graves said an adult softball tournament that attracted 52 teams to Vicksburg brought in an estimated $1.1 million. That amount includes money spent by out-of-towners at restaurants and hotels.

&#8220If we can do that on a weekly basis, we can bring a ton of revenue into the city,” Graves said.

Youth baseball tournaments in Vicksburg will be plentiful. Besides the annual Governor’s Cup, which is played over two weekends in late July and early August, Halls Ferry Park is scheduled to host at least four other youth tournaments in June and July.

To kick off the summer schedule, the Vicksburg Girls Softball Association will host the Rumble on the River Fast-Pitch Tournament June 15-17.

Marshall Upton, president of the Vicksburg Baseball Association, said more tournaments will be played in the city than ever before.

&#8220This would have never happened without volunteers,” Upton said, adding that larger cities such as Birmingham, Mobile, Ala., and Memphis, usually hire a paid contractor to run tournaments – a luxury Vicksburg can’t afford.

Graves credited the larger number of tournaments this summer partially to the increased popularity of youth baseball in the area. He said the success of local products such as brothers Justin and Jordan Henry at Ole Miss, Joey Lieberman at Memphis and Taylor Tankersley with the Florida Marlins has generated interest.

&#8220We’ve had a lot of athletes come through here that are great baseball players,” Graves said. &#8220When you have those kind of people, it brings popularity levels up and everyone wants to play.”

A proposed recreation complex off of Fisher Ferry Road has been in the works for some time. All of the summer tournaments will be played at Halls Ferry and Bazinsky parks.
