Margaret Clyde Bryant Everett
Margaret Clyde Bryant Everett was born in Coffeeville, Miss., June 14, 1910, the daughter of Alfred Alexander and Clara Carr Bryant.
She attended Coffeeville schools and later WardBelmont in Nashville, Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans, and Ole Miss, where she received the first degree given in the Music Department. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority and was crowned “Miss Ole Miss” 1933, an honor she carried with her the rest of her life.
Fittingly, she married “Colonel Rebel” 1933 (then known as “King of Mardi Gras”), a lawyer from Indianola. She and Frank lived briefly in Greenwood, Jackson, Corpus Christi (while he was in the Navy) and later settled in Vicksburg, where they built “Everest,” a beautiful colonial home overlooking the Mississippi River.
Clyde was very active in the Presbyterian church and many civic clubs, especially the Vicksburg Garden Club and, at one time, served as the State Garden Club president. She was especially interested in history and belonged to the State Historical Association, of which her husband served as its first president in the new era. Fittingly, she was an ardent member of the D.A.R., Colonial Dames and First Families of Mississippi.
Clyde was a delight to be with, a rabid Rebel who loved to always do a rousing “Hotty Toddy” after every Ole Miss victory. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She leaves two nieces, Betty Pechak of Memphis and Keren Wells of Oxford; one nephew, George Everett of Oxford; and 10 great nieces and nephews; along with scores of adoring cousins and loved ones, including her devoted goddaughter, Joan Bailey of Vicksburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two brothers, Alfred Alexander Bryant Jr. and Carl Bryant.
A “Celebration of Her Life in Christ” will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Vicksburg at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007. The Rev. Tim Erskine will lead the service, using Clyde’s favorite scriptures. Cham Trotter will sing her favorite songs, and Barbara Tracy will play other favorites on the organ. Gordon Cotton, Warner Alford, Briggs Hopson, Wayne Pratt and others will recall favorite stories about Clyde.
Immediately following, a reception will be held at the home of Joan Bailey, 124 Maison Rue. Friends and family are invited.
