Friday is the final day to register to vote in party primaries for county and state posts next month.
Anyone 18 or older, or who will be 18 by Aug. 7, and has not enrolled just needs to go to the Warren County Circuit Clerk’s office on the second floor of the courthouse with papers showing name, age and address.
The primaries will be the opening salvo of the 2007 election season for which ballots were set when qualifying by candidates closed on March 1.
Local primaries will include three for Democrats – District 2 supervisor, District 3 supervisor and Central District justice court judge.
The primary in District 3 is tantamount to election, since the winner, either incumbent Charles Selmon or challenger James Stirgus Jr., will face no general election opponent.
In District 2, incumbent William Banks faces a challenge from Michael Gates. The primary winner advances to face independent Tommie Rawlings.
For the judgeship, incumbent Richard Bradford III faces Dora Smith and Beverly Prentiss. A runoff will be needed unless one of the three gets more than half the votes cast. The winner on primary day or the runoff will have no general election opponent.
Four Republican primaries are on tap.
In Senate District 23, Chester Masterson, W. Briggs Hopson III and James “Buddy” Terrell will compete to face Democrat Eric Rawlings in the general election.
In House District 54, Alex Monsour and Ryan Sadler will compete to face independent Thomas Setser and Democrat Jennifer Thomas.
For supervisor in District 1, incumbent David McDonald faces John Arnold with the winner advancing to face independents Margaret Gilmer and Tony Ford.
In District 5, James W. McCoy and Joe Wooley compete to see who faces the independents, incumbent Richard George, Robert Hubbard, Kenneth Sharp Jr. and Democrat Frank Gardner.
This may be the last election in which any voter can vote in either primary.
A ruling from a federal judge in June that says the state Democratic and Republican parties may close primary voting to nonparty members starting with the 2008 elections is being challenged. If nothing changes, that means state voters will re-enroll and declare a party affiliation.
While registration of voters for primary voting closes Friday in Warren County, some area counties may continue registration though Saturday.
Poll books open again Monday, and people may still register to vote in the general election until 30 days before election day.
