Another talent tie marked Wednesday’s preliminary competition for the Miss Mississippi 2007 title with three winners taking second-night honors and $300 scholarships.
Tuesday’s preliminary had two talent winners and three swimwear winners.
The third and final night of preliminaries is tonight at the Vicksburg Convention Center, with the crowning of the new Miss Mississippi on Saturday night.
Miss William Carey Elizabeth Goff, 22, Miss New South Anna Elizabeth Tadlock, 21 and Miss Itawamba Community College Amanda Fleming were announced as the second night’s talent winners.
Miss University Amanda Harmon, 22, was the sole swimwear winner. She was awarded a $200 scholarship.
Goff was particularly excited about being honored for talent. “Winning the overall title would be great,” she said, “but I’m a vocal performance major, so this was my main goal.”
It is Goff’s first year competing in the pageant. Twelve days before arriving in Vicksburg, she had to change her selection because of a copyright barrier. She sang “On the Steps of the Palace” from the musical “Into the Woods.”
Tadlock, who placed in the Top Ten of last year’s competition, is a student at Mississippi State University. She sang “A New Life” from the musical “Jekyll and Hyde.”
“I’m absolutely stunned,” she said. “I’m very thankful and very blessed.”
Fleming is a first-year competitor. She sang “Pie Jesu” from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem Mass. Her win was especially dear on this night, the anniversary of her grandmother’s death.
“I know she’s just so proud,” Fleming said tearfully. About her selection, she said, “I heard it and I knew it was just ‘it.’ I practiced so hard – I’m elated.”
Harmon, another first-year competitor, said fitness has always been a priority for her.
“I’ve always tried to live a healthy lifestyle, exercise and eat right. I worked hard,” she said.
In preliminary rounds, contestants also compete in on-stage questions and evening wear. Those scores plus the off-stage judge’s interview scores, which are not revealed, are added to determine the Top Ten for the final night on Saturday.
Saturday night’s scores together with the composite score, will determine the 50th Miss Mississippi to be crowned in Vicksburg.
