James Lee Buie
Services for James Lee Buie will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Vicksburg Auditorium. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Funeral Home. Family will be present from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. J&B Cab Station will be closed from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday. For information, call 601-636-0099.
Mr. Buie died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at University Medical Center in Jackson. He was 52.
Mr. Buie owned J&B Cab Co.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Frances Shelley; his father, Calvin Buie Sr.; and a brother, Finnas Huntley.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Buie of Vicksburg; four daughters, Britney Buie, Brina Buie and Tameka Butler, all of Vicksburg, and Yolanda Nesbitt of Detroit; one son, Kenneth Green of Vicksburg; two sisters, Hattie Dunn of Vicksburg and Eddilean Chatman of Canton; and four brothers, Willie Glasper and Calvin Buie, both of Vicksburg, Dr. Peter Shelley of Chicago and Joseph Buie of Ohio.
Robert Cooper Jr.
PORT GIBSON – Robert Cooper Jr. died Sunday, July 15, 2007, at his home in Port Gibson. He was 54.
Mr. Cooper was a graduate of Addison High School and was a member of Tillman Chapel Christian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Cooper Sr. and Elizabeth Douglas Cooper; and one brother, Sammy Lee Cooper.
He is survived by three sisters, Ethel Grady, Bobbie Rankin and Jessie Thomas, all of Port Gibson; two brothers, Benjamin Cooper of Port Gibson and Jack Cooper of Los Angeles; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tillman Chapel Christian Church with Elder Walter Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Logan Cemetery in Rodney under the direction of Robbins Funeral Home.
Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.
R. Henry Jones
R. Henry Jones died Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at his residence. He was 94.
Born in Warren County, he was the son of the late Robert Cameron Jones and Anna Wood Henry Jones. Mr. Jones was a 1931 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where he was class valedictorian and a graduate of the Class of 1935 at Mississippi State University.
Moving to Clemson, S.C., he taught and worked in the Clemson University Experiment Station for several years. Mr. Jones did graduate study at Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Va., and later worked with soil conversation in Duck Hill, N.C.
A steward of the land, an avid conservationist, historian and educator, he owned and operated Hillview Farms in Warren County from 1949 until his death. Active in local and state conservation organizations, Mr. Jones was a member of the Warren County Soil Conservation Board for more than 38 years. He was a member of the Karnack Hunting Club, where he served as president for 30 years and enjoyed hunting with his sons.
Mr. Jones was a member of Edwards Baptist Church, where he was baptized at an early age.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Zula D. Jones; a daughter, Anna Jones-Skeide of Bremen, Germany; four sons, Phillip Jones of Flora and Dewey Jones, Dave Jones and Glen Jones, all of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Riles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kent Campbell, pastor of Woodlawn Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Henry-Grant Family Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Saturday until the hour of the service.
Pallbearers will be Brannon Jones, Taylor Jones, Glen Jones Jr., Eddie Henry, Robert Henry, Ron Bassett, Addison Thomas Jr. and Charles Henry.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Smith Jr., Thomas Henry, Leon Henry, Elbert Redditt, Bill Tomlinson, Jimmy Chester, Stanley Porter, Johnny Griffin, Hazel Hancock, Marie Taylor, Sonya DeVille, Virginia Feder and members of Karnack Hunting Club.
Vernon Parker
Vernon Parker died Wednesday, July 18, 2007. He was 36.
A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Parker was a plumber and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Parker of Vicksburg; his parents, Ernest and Marion Parker of Vicksburg; and a brother, James E. Parker Jr. of Grapevine, Texas.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Redbone United Methodist Church Cemetery with Dr. Matt Buckles, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Riles Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Todd May, Ronnie Nevels, Micky Parker, Tommy Parker, Shane Quimby and Dr. Bill Johnston.
Doris Bell Russell Doris Bell Russell
JACKSON – Doris Bell Russell died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Ridgeland Pointe. She was 90.
Mrs. Russell was born in Greenwood to the late Decatur and Eva Bell. She graduated from Greenwood Public Schools and attended Mississippi College.
In 1946, she moved with her husband to Jackson, where he became a partner in the family’s wholesale grocery business, the Russell Company. They moved in 1954 to Vicksburg and retired to Jackson in 1977.
She was a member of Wells Memorial United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames, Colonial Clergy and the United Daughters of the War of 1812.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Russell; a brother, Billy West Bell; and a sister, Allene B. Ulrich.
Survivors include a son, Edward H. Russell Jr.; four daughters, Diane Russell, Carol Russell, Meredith R. Boerner and Nancy R. Reno; and 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street in Jackson. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service.
