A Friday afternoon shooting on Main Street left a Vicksburg man dead, and two people have been arrested and charged with his murder.
Leroy Barnes, 31, 1013 Urban Court, died just before 3 p.m. after being taken to River Region Medical Center, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.
“He was shot in the left thigh,” and the bullet also punctured his right leg, said Huskey.
An autopsy is scheduled for today at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson.
James Ward, 28, and Antonio Hicks, 27, no addresses available, were arrested Friday night and charged with murder, said Vicksburg Police Chief Tommy Moffett.
Both were in the Warren County Jail without bond. Hicks also faces a felony gun possession charge, Moffett said.
“They’ve both been arrested a number of times,” Moffett said. “We did recover a weapon that we believe was used in the shooting.”
He declined to identify the type of gun.
The shooting occurred around 2:15 Friday afternoon in the 1800 block of Main Street.
Barnes had been riding in a vehicle with two other people, said Vicksburg Police Sgt. Virgil Woodall. The driver stopped, said Woodall, and Barnes got out of the car. It was not clear why the driver stopped or why Barnes left the vehicle.
“He was shot outside the car,” Woodall said.
The two passengers drove Barnes to River Region, where he was pronounced dead, Woodall said.
Moffett said Friday night that police were not looking for any other suspects.
“At this point, we don’t have any other people of interest,” he said.
Friday’s shooting was the fifth homicide in Vicksburg this year.
