Flashes look to bounce back in first home game|[09/07/07]

St. Aloysius head coach Jim Taylor saw many things during the Flashes’ 34-6 loss to Bogue Chitto last week that needed to be fixed.
Luckily for the Flashes, everything can be.
St. Al opens its home schedule tonight seeking its first win of the year against a vastly-improved Dexter club.
“They don’t have a lot of players, but they do have a big fullback and an elusive quarterback,” Taylor said. “They will line up in a wing-T, double-slot receivers and trips on one side in the shotgun. They are just as likely to run the quarterback out of it as they are to throw it down the field.
“The most dangerous thing is when the quarterback starts rolling out and the receivers come to get the ball.”
Dexter is coming off a 21-13 victory over Cathedral in last week’s opener. The Bulldogs built a 21-0 halftime lead before allowing Cathedral to score 13 third-quarter points. Running back Jamaal Pittman scored a rushing touchdown and quarterback Mario Miller tossed a long touchdown pass. Pittman, a 5-foot, 9-inch, 215-pound freshman is the Bulldogs’ main weapon. Taylor said the Bulldogs just keep giving the ball to him and letting him run down the field.
“When the quarterback gets out of the pocket, we probably don’t match up real well with that,” Taylor said. “But as long as we keep him in the pocket, I feel like we are in pretty good shape.”
Taylor said the final score of the Bogue Chitto game was not indicative of his team’s play. Several times the team was down inside the Bobcats’ 10-yard line without coming away with any points. Junior quarterback Chris Lewis led the Flashes’ offense with 53 yards rushing on 17 carries.
“We didn’t block very well,” Taylor said. “On defense, we gave up a couple of long touchdown runs to the quarterback in the first half. Our depth showed up as well. We got tired.
“We had some bright spots, though. To win on Friday night, we will have to improve.”
The Flashes left Bogue Chitto without any injuries. Several lineman played last week after missing most of summer workouts with injuries. Taylor said the team will be at full strength on Friday night.
“We need to improve on the running game and that starts with better blocking,” Taylor said. “We have to get more aggressive on defense.”
The Flashes did not play Dexter last season, but because of reclassification the teams are region rivals. This also will mark the first of three straight home games for St. Al.
