William T. Cochran

William T. Cochran died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at his home. He was 88.

Born in Reform, Miss., he had been a resident of Vicksburg for 40 years. He was retired from Marathon-LeTourneau and was an Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of the Warrenton Independent Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Sybil Wood Cochran of Vicksburg; three sons, Charles “Butch” Cochran and Danny Cochran, both of Belzoni, and David Cochran of Vicksburg; three daughters, Gail Harrison and Pat Holloway, both of Belzoni, and Lulu Lyons of Vicksburg; one brother, Curtis Cochran of Sherman, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Curtis officiating. Burial will follow at Yokena Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Brian Cochran, Steve Cochran, Heath Cochran, Clayton Cochran, Jason Harrison and Brad Lyons.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Warrenton Independent Baptist Church and employees of Providence Hospice.

Count Guy Evans Sr.

Services for Count Guy Evans Sr. were Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at Norris Funeral Home in Bay Minette, Ala.

Burial followed at Stockton Memorial Cemetery in Stockton, Ala.

Mr. Evans died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. He was 92.

A native of Oklahoma, Mr. Evans had obtained his education through high school in private schools and completed an accounting course at Southern Methodist University. He was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church in Vicksburg. He was a Mason, life member of William H. Stevens Lodge No. 121 F&AM in Vicksburg. After high school, he worked as a clerk-steno and aide for a presidential hopeful candidate in the 1932 election year. In 1933, he began his career as a civilian with the War Department and Department of the Army working as a clerk with the Civilian Conservation Corps.

In 1936, he joined the Corps of Engineers while working principally in the accounting field. He worked in the Memphis District, Little Rock District and Southwestern Division. In 1947, he transferred to the Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station as fiscal officer and comptroller. He retired as chief of Resource Management Office from Waterways in 1980 after 47 years of service. During the Korean Conflict in 1951-1952, he served as administrative executive assistant at Waterways. He received the Department of the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Award and the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service. He was inducted into the Gallery of Distinguished Employees.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Dan W. and Rexie Gertrude Evans; his wife, Leona Evans in 1996; a brother, Earl Gilbert Evans; two sisters, Jetty Pauline Evans and Jewel May Madsen; and a daughter, Glenda Lackey.

He is survived by his son, Count Evans Jr. of Monroeville, Ala; three sisters, Erma Dorene Casey Huckstep of Okmulgee, Okla., and Doris Faye Carson Brooks and Ina Lois Malone, both of Rogers, Ark.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gwendolyn Denise Mazie

Gwendolyn Denise Mazie died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. She was 40.

Mrs. Mazie was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Nell Lenoir Catchings; and two brothers, Edward Don Lenoir and Tyrone Mazie.

Survivors include her father, Homer Mazie of Hazlehurst; six children, Edward Mazie, Darren Mazie, Jeremy Mazie, Joyce Lenoir, Clyde Mazie and Jermarcus Curry, all of Vicksburg; her fiance, Kenny Claiborne of Vicksburg; three brothers, Carlos Malone and Richard Lenoir, both of Hazlehurst, and Homer Lenoir of Vicksburg; two sisters, Betty Curry of Vicksburg and Sharon Malone of Hazlehurst; five grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
