The injuries continued to mount for the Porters Chapel Eagles last week at Prairie View, but coach Randy Wright said he expects most of the walking wounded to be back for tonight’s District 5-A opener against Veritas.

The Eagles lost their best lineman Matt Hall to a concussion and quarterback Matt Cranfield rolled his ankle and did not play in the fourth quarter as PCA lost 34-7.

“We could’ve beaten Prairie View, but we gave up a big play right before the half and then Matt Hall gets hurt with the concussion and Cranfield rolls his ankle,” Wright said. Cranfield and the team’s leading tackler in Brad Pennington (ankle) are both expected to play tonight against Veritas (1-1). Hall will be a game-time decision.

Veritas had a bye last week. They beat SIA in the season opener and then lost to Sumter Academy of York, Ala., 34-14 two weeks ago.

“Veritas has a bunch of kids who have been playing together for the last three or four years. Those kids are now juniors and seniors and they’ve become a very solid team,’ Wright said.

PCA got a lift from Colby Rushing who returned a kickoff for the Eagles’ lone touchdown. PCA has scored just 20 points in three games this season. When Cranfield went out, Rushing played quarterback.

“Colby is a good young guy. He didn’t throw much but he did have that big kickoff return for us,” Wright said.
