Lady Vikes rock Vicksburg High, 15-0|[09/21/07]

There have been a few things to nitpick about Warren Central’s performance this season. A lack of hitting one game, maybe an error or two the next. That’s really all it is, though, is nitpicking. The Lady Vikes have beaten almost all challengers, and added another victim to their list on Thursday.

Mandy Fuller went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Tiffany Fuller and Sissy Hearn both had two hits apiece, and Warren Central collected 14 hits in a 15-0 rout of crosstown rival Vicksburg High (5-12). Andi Hearn had three singles and an RBI for the Lady Vikes.

The win improved WC’s record to 17-2 and set up a showdown at Division 6-5A rival Brandon on Tuesday. Brandon handed the Lady Vikes one of their losses, and Tuesday’s game will decide the division championship. WC needs to win by two or more runs to win the title, and earn a first-round home playoff series.

“We’re hitting the ball much better now,” WC coach Lucy Young said. “The past few games, we had 18 hits against Cleveland, about that many against St. Al, and I don’t know how many today. We’ve gotten some pretty good hits, and that’s what we’re hoping for.”

There was little to nitpick about the Lady Vikes’ effort on Thursday. They jumped on Vicksburg for six runs in the bottom of the first and never let up. WC added three more in the second and six in the third to win by the mercy rule.

WC loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, and got on the board with sacrifice flies from Bridget Dillon and Mandy Bordelon. Ke Ke Prentiss followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-0, and a botched fielder’s choice, a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single by No. 11 hitter Fran Brown capped the inning.

Mandy Fuller’s two-run homer to the gap in right-center keyed the second-inning rally, and she delivered a two-run single in the third to help the Lady Vikes finish it off. Bordelon and Kacie Whittington also had RBI singles in the third.

As good as she was at the plate, Mandy Fuller was even better on the mound. She didn’t allow a baserunner until Leah Davies reached on an error to lead off the third, and Tira Erwin followed with a single for the Missy Gators’ only hit.

The hardest hit on Fuller came from the home plate umpire. As Davies ran to third on Erwin’s hit — Davies was thrown out on the play — Fuller was heading toward the dugout to back up the throw.

At the same time, the umpire ran down the line to make the call. They collided, and Fuller was laid out flat on her back. Fuller lay there for a moment, laughing at the incident, until the umpire helped her up.
