After a three-day search by city and county officers, police arrested a man suspected of committing other violent crimes in the same area where an 86-year-old woman was raped a week ago today.

Quinton Williams, 20, 3655 Wisconsin Ave., was found hiding in a garbage bag under a house on Mount Alban Road at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace. The house was believed to be the residence of Williams’ girlfriend, Vicksburg Police Chief Tommy Moffett said this morning.

“It was one of several addresses we developed as possible locations,” Pace said.

Vicksburg police said earlier this week that they were working with the sheriff’s department to find and arrest Williams, who was wanted for a probation violation from the Mississippi Department of Corrections. He was on probation after a conviction of auto burglary. He is also a suspect in two armed robberies in February and March on Bazinsky and Lake Hill roads, police said.

Sgt. Tom Wilson of the Vicksburg Police Department said this week that police want to close all of the violent crime cases that have occurred since 2004 in an area off Halls Ferry Road, north of Waterways Experiment Station. Since that time, at least three rapes have been reported, in addition to the two armed robberies.

Pace said Williams was arrested on the warrant for the probation violation. As of this morning, he faced no other charges. He was in the Warren County Jail without bond.

“Currently, he is the subject of inquiries by both agencies for unrelated criminal activity,” Pace said.

Wilson said police will continue to work with the sheriff’s department to determine whether to charge Williams with any other crimes.

No arrests have been made in the rape a week ago. The victim, who was treated and released from River Region Medical Center after the attack, returned about a day later after suffering a heart attack.

She was in intensive care earlier this week, but a family member said this morning she was no longer in intensive care and “doing well and improving daily.”

Earlier attacks in the same residential area included a 2005 assault on a 91-year-old woman, also in her home. She has since died.

In an unrelated case last Friday, sheriff’s deputies were anticipating more arrests in a triple shooting at Autumn Oak Townhouses, 4920 Halls Ferry Road. The condition of one of the victims, Robert Hunt, 26, had been upgraded from fair to good condition this morning at University Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said. The other two victims, Zachary Bryant, 19, and Derrick Jackson, 32, were no longer listed in hospital records. All three are Vicksburg residents.

Sheriff’s deputies have made one arrest in the shootings On Tuesday, Danny Curry, 19, 4920 Halls Ferry Road, Apt. 15, was arrested at about 9 a.m. at the complex. He was charged with aggravated assault, jail records show.
