FLOWOOD — South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier, and more recently LSU coach Les Miles, are known for calling trick plays.
Friday night at University Christian, Porters Chapel coach Randy Wright pulled one out of his hat, using a reverse flea-flicker on the first play of the game for an early 7-0 lead en route to the Eagles’ first shutout of the season, a 27-0 decision over the Flames.
Senior tailback Austin Barber took a handoff from quarterback Matt Cranfield and sprinted to the right side of the field. He then handed off to sophomore wide receiver Colby Rushing, who came from the opposite direction on a reverse. Rushing’s pitch back to Cranfield was good and Cranfield heaved the ball downfield to a wide open Jeremy Roach for an eye-popping 64-yard touchdown pass.
“That’s a play we run every day to close out practice on and it worked for us tonight giving us an early lead,” Wright said.
University Christian threatened in the second quarter, driving into PCA territory, but running back Zachary Peace fumbled and lineman Matt Hall recovered.
Cranfield capped a 13-play, 72-yard drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak up the middle making the score at 13-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Rushing, who doubles at defensive back for the Eagles, intercepted a John Dugan pass at the 50-yard line and returned the ball to the UC 6. Barber scored three plays later to make it 20-0.
Brad Pennington added the last score for the Eagles in the fourth quarter to end the game.
“We came out tonight and played four quarters of hard football. Besides the first play, we started slow, but we did what it took to get the win tonight for our first shutout,” Wright said.
