An SUV stolen in Vicksburg Monday morning apparently traveled to Jackson before being chased back to Vicksburg, where it was wrecked Monday afternoon.
Arrested at the scene on Interstate 20 at the Clay Street exit was Timothy Reeves, 28, 26 Standard Hill Road, and a passenger. Authorities later released the passenger. “We found that he was not involved with the auto theft,” Vicksburg Police Sgt. Tim Wilson said.
The 1999 Ford Explorer was brought to a halt after a tire deflation device, also known as a spike strip, was placed across the highway. The vehicle overturned and landed in a ditch on the north side of the interstate.
Reeves and his passenger were not hurt, authorities said. The Explorer sideswiped another vehicle as it was crashing, but no one in that vehicle was injured either, authorities said. Westbound traffic on the interstate was at a standstill following the wreck for abut 30 minutes.
Reeves faces charges of auto theft in Vicksburg and felony eluding charges from the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said a Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics agent, who attempted the initial traffic stop in Jackson, plans to charge Reeves with felony eluding as well.
Wilson said the Explorer was reported stolen at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the 1200 block of Warrenton Road. Police saw a vehicle matching the description leaving the city limits on I-20 East a few minutes later.
Then at about 2 p.m., an MBN agent spotted a 1999 Ford Explorer westbound on I-20 in Jackson driving “erratically.” After checking the vehicle’s license number, the agent realized the tag didn’t match the vehicle and then attempted to make a traffic stop on I-20 between Ellis Avenue and the I-220 exit.
The driver of the Explorer did not pull over and the chase back toward Vicksburg began.
Pace said the MBN agent reported the vehicle to be driving more than 100 mph at times and passing other motorists on the shoulder on the interstate. The agent began notifying the Clinton Police Department and Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.
The pursuit entered Warren County, where sheriff’s deputies as well as Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol personnel were waiting. Pace said tire deflation devices had been set up by sheriff’s deputies near Bovina to stop the vehicle. However, the Explorer was able to swerve and miss them, nearly hitting the vehicle of a sheriff’s deputy in doing so, Pace said.
The chase ended after the devices placed by Vicksburg police were hit by the Explorer at about 2:30 p.m.
