Vikings can earn playoff spot with win and Clinton loss|[11/09/07]

Warren Central fans will have two teams to pull for tonight. Besides being behind their Vikings, chants of “Go Provine” may also be heard through Viking Stadium when WC hosts Grenada tonight at 7:30.
The playoff scenario for Region 2-5A is this: if Provine beats Clinton (7-3, 4-2) tonight in Clinton, the Rams (9-1, 5-1) win the region and the Vikings (4-6, 3-3) qualify provided, of course, they beat Grenada (5-5, 2-4). If Clinton wins, the Vikings are out and Provine finishes fourth and the Rams, not the Vikings, get to face South Panola, ranked No. 2 in the nation by Sports Illustrated and winners of 71 straight.
WC coach Curtis Brewer said he hopes it’s his Vikings who get the trip next week to Batesville.
“It would be a good thing for this team and our seniors to play Panola again,” said Brewer, whose team fell to Panola in the Red Carpet Bowl Classic in August, 28-16.
The matter at hand rests with Grenada and that has all of Brewer and his team’s attention.
“We want to do everything we can to win this one so we can recognize our seniors and thank them for their persistence they’ve shown all season. They’ve kept working hard through the hard times and this is a big week for them,” Brewer said.
While Grenada has a similar overall record to the Vikings, the Chargers have not done well against the region’s upper division. WC, meanwhile, has played well in all of its six previous region games, including getting a season highlight win at Clinton (28-23) and nearly beating Provine (14-9) last week.
“That was a really hard loss last Friday night against Provine. We gave up almost no yardage in the second and third quarters, we have two backs go over 100 yards, our offensive line played tremendous and then to still come up short, really hurt our kids,” Brewer said.
Three big plays doomed the Vikings. Provine linebacker Maxie Graham sacked quarterback Keaton Sanders, causing a fumble which Maxie returned 55 yards for a touchdown. Provine quarterback Nickoe Whitley then converted a fourth-and-20 pass for a touchdown to put the Rams in the lead. Then the Rams intercepted a Sanders pass on the Vikings next drive to end their hopes.
Still, Brewer can look at the numbers which showed the Vikings out rushing the Rams 202-53. WC tailback Joel Forbes had 110 yards rushing, pushing him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Fullback Travis Bell had 84 yards rushing and 34 more receiving and scored his third touchdown over the last two weeks.
“Travis keeps coming up with bigger plays every week. He has really taken to a leadership role,” Brewer said.
The WC defense continues it strong play. Defensive ends Bennie Peoples and R.W. Comans leads the group. Linebacker Joe Harris paces the team in tackles.
