Catherine Cora Brown
Catherine Cora Brown died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. She was 78.
Mrs. Brown was a native of Flora and had lived most of her life in Vicksburg. She was formerly employed at Westinghouse Corp. and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Vilas Dewitt and Mollie Alexander Gray; her husband, Marion R. Brown; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances Baker and Johnny Baker; and a granddaughter, Mary Catherine Nevels.
She is survived by two daughters, Janice Brown and Debra Brown (Jimmy) Nevels, all of Vicksburg; three brothers, Dewitt Gray of Vicksburg, Gene (Wanda) Gray of Cordova, Tenn., and David Gray of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Mildred Williams of Biloxi; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Cresswell officiating. Burial will follow at Green Acres Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be John Gray, Jim Nevels, Richard Nevels, Kent Slaughter, Greg Uzzle and Christopher Uzzle.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Nevels Sr., James Reaves and Dr. George Abraham.
William Carroll Sr.
CARY — William Carroll Sr. died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at his home in Cary. He was 74.
Mr. Carroll is survived by his wife, Bettie Jean Carroll; four sons, William Carroll Jr., Phillip Carroll and Tyrone Carroll, all of Kansas City, Mo., and John Carroll of Rolling Fork; five daughters, Patricia Carroll of Kansas City, Latanya Tankson of Vicksburg, and Pamela Tatum, Marilyn Stamps and Verda Stamps, all of Cary; two brothers, Abraham Carroll and Robert Carroll, both of Kansas City; three sisters, Lula Carroll of Kansas City and Elizebeth Reed and Clara Anderson, both of Grandview, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion M.B. Church in Cary with Pastor Eugene Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Cary Community Cemetery.
A wake service will be from 5 until 6 tonight at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
E.W. Chase
ROLLING FORK — E.W. “Dago” Chase died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at his home in Rolling Fork. He was 70.
Mr. Chase is survived by his wife, Velma Chase of Rolling Fork; six sons, Charles Bentley, James Earl Chase and Willie Ray Bentley, all of Pompano Beach, Fla., Samuel Hall of California, and Bobbie Jo Canada and Ike Canada, both of Rolling Fork; three daughters, Betty Jo Bentley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Brenda H. Jackson of Greenville and Rosie Nichols of Rolling Fork; his companion, Sarah Canada of Rolling Fork; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with Pastor Elijah Eason officiating. Burial will follow at Cynthia Diana Cemetery in Anguilla.
A wake service will be from 6:30 until 7:30 tonight at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Lynn Pennebaker Birdsong Strate
MISSOULA, Mont. — Lynn Pennebaker Birdsong Strate, age 66, died Sept. 27, 2007, at her home in Missoula, Mont., following a long illness.
Lynn, formerly of Edwards, was employed for many years with the State of Mississippi in Jackson and Vicksburg, Blue Cross Blue Shield in Helena, Mont., and the state of Montana in Missoula when she retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Lee and Velma Lord Pennebaker of Edwards.
She is survived by her husband, David M. Strate of Missoula; her three sons, William Birdsong Jr. (Dorothy), Jon Pennebaker Birdsong (Robyn) and Lee Birdsong; and grandchildren, Jason, Jack, Mary Beth, Austin and Colton, all of Hinds County; a stepson, Scott Strate (Amy) and their children, Brayden, Cassie and Dallin of Monument, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Shari Strate Brown (Wade) and their children, Garrek, Ailli, Jenna, Maika and Neleh of Orem, Utah.
Lynn is also survived by three brothers, Lee (Barbara), Jon and Claude (Lisa) Pennebaker of Warren and Hinds counties in Mississippi; many local nieces and nephews and other relatives; and her father- and mother-in-law, Sherman and Barbara Strate of Bigfork, Mont.
Funeral services were held Oct. 2, 2007, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Missoula, and interment was at Lone Pine Cemetery in Darby, Mont.
A “Celebration of Life” service is planned for Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, with visitation at 10 a.m. to the 11 a.m. hour of service at Fisher Funeral Home chapel, 1803 Cherry St., Vicksburg, MS. No flowers please, just memorials to a charity of your choice if you wish.
Emanuel Whitley
Services for Emanuel Whitley will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion M.B. Church, Ballground, with the Rev. Charlie Blackmore officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday at Robbins Funeral Home and Sunday at the church from noon until the service.
Mr. Whitley died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. He was 91.
Born in the Ballground community, Mr. Whitley was a retired logger and farmer. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a deacon at Mount Zion M.B. Church at Ballground.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Whitley; his parents, Dan and Carrie Whitley; one brother, Will Whitley; and a grandchild, Emmanuel Aziz.
Survivors include a son, Wali Aziz of Vicksburg; a daughter, Claudette Williams of Clarksdale; one brother, Leon Whitley of Vicksburg; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
