Claude Taylor Bagley Jr.

Claude Taylor Bagley Jr., former Division counsel, Lower Mississippi Valley Division, Corps of Engineers, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007. He was 71.

Claude was born in Vernon, Texas, in 1936 to a hard-working, sharecropping family. They moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1952. While in Alaska, Claude enlisted in the Army, training at Fort Gordon, Ga., and serving in South Korea. He worked as a surveyor near Prudhoe Bay, hunted polar bear, drove the Alcan Highway, worked in a warehouse, bartered with Native Americans in local villages, worked in sales and skinned a walrus. He also met and married his wife and had three children in Alaska before leaving the state in 1967 to attend college.

He received an undergraduate degree from Washington State University, a juris doctorate from the University of Idaho and a master of laws from George Washington University. He also completed the Senior Executive Fellows Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Claude joined the Corps of Engineers in 1973, serving as Counsel for the Walla Walla, Wash., District. In 1977, he served a one-year tour in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before accepting the Division counsel post in Vicksburg in 1979. He served as Division counsel, Lower Mississippi Valley Division and chief legal officer, Mississippi River Commission, until his retirement in 1996.

Claude was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Taylor Bagley Sr. and Alice Elizabeth Bagley; and a daughter, Deborah Leigh Bagley.

Claude is survived by his wife, Barbara Patricia Bagley of Vicksburg; sister, Carolyn Brundin of St. David, Ariz.; daughter, Pamela Anne Bagley of Ridgeland; son, Lance Taylor Bagley, daughter-in-law, Fiona Louise Bagley, and three granddaughters, Caroline, Stephanie and Katharine of Alpharetta, Ga.

Leahrene Davis Foster

Leahrene Davis Foster died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at the Claiborne County Nursing Center. She was 79.

Born in Hinds County, Mrs. Foster was a member of St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church, where she served on the mother board and in the choir.

She was a member of American Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213 Women’s Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Foster; her parents, John Miller Davis and Leah Jacob Davis; and three brothers, John M. Davis Jr., James Alfred Davis and Dudley Davis.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Yvonne Foster Williams of Vicksburg; a sister, Ruth Davis Robinson of Bolton; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Thelma Hubbard

Thelma Hubbard died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Promise Specialty Hospital. She was 100.

Mrs. Hubbard was a member of Travelers Rest Baptist Church and the Knights and Daughters of Tabor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Hubbard; two daughters, Flora Carpenter and Beatrice Hubbard; three brothers, Lucien “Buster” Carpenter, Valley Carpenter and Willie Carpenter; eight sisters, Emma Carpenter Huell, Ella Carpenter Miller, Olivia Carpenter Turner, Katie Carpenter, Louise Carpenter, Nettie Carpenter Baker, Alberta “Toncie” Cain and Gertrude Carpenter; her parents, James and Louise Carpenter; and her grandparents, Vinnie and Robert Carpenter.

She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and members of the Carpenter, Huell, Miller, Turner, Sanders, Baker, Jackson, Thomas and Bacon families.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Travelers Rest Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Bernard officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Fred Matthew Johnson Sr.

Fred Matthew Johnson Sr. died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at River Region Medical Center. He was 63.

Mr. Johnson served in Vietnam in 1966 through 1968 where he received numerous military honors, including the Bronze Star. An electrician, he was a member of Local 619 most of his adult life and the Catholic faith at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Millie Ann DeVore of Vicksburg.

He is survived by a son, Fred Matthew Johnson Jr. of Vicksburg; a daughter, Jackie Johnson Wilson of Vicksburg; two sisters, Helen Bell and Silver Arnold, both of Vicksburg; and three granddaughters, Madison, Madeline and Mallorie Johnston, all of Vicksburg.

Memorial services will be at 2 today at Fisher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Farrell officiating. Visitation will be from 1 today until the hour of service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Salvation Army.

Special thanks would like to be given to Hometown Medical, United Medical, Mississippi Homecare, Dr. Murray Whitaker, Dr. Russell Barnes, Dr. Michael Davis and especially, Dr. Robert A. Loyce Mitchell

Mrs. Loyce Mitchell died Monday, Nov. 26, at her home. She was 71.

A native of Port Gibson, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Lee Kilpatrick and Percie McCurley Kilpatrick.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and was active for many years with the Women of St. George and the annual Lebanese Dinner. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She also was a former hostess with the Miss Mississippi Pageant.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe M. Mitchell Sr.; a brother, Robert Lee Kilpatrick; and a twin sister, Peggy Joyce Thompson.

She is survived by four sons, Joey and wife, Denise Mitchell, and Rickey and wife, Melba Mitchell, all of Vicksburg, Brian and wife, Jocelyn Mitchell, of Athens, Ala., and David and wife, Marissa Mitchell, of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Jo Helen Wene of Monroe, La.; and two granddaughters, Sarah Mitchell of Vicksburg and Gabrielle Mitchell of Richmond; and four grandsons, Dane Mitchell, Jeff Mitchell and Michael Mitchell, all of Vicksburg, and Dr. Shea Allen of Madison.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church with the Very Rev. John Morris officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday at the church.

Trisagion prayers will be at 7 tonight at Fisher Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and Don Embry, Jason Rutland and John Ryan Lee.

Harold Scott

Services for Harold Scott will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Johnnie Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 until 6 today at Williams Funeral Service and Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Scott died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007, at his home. He was 48.

Mr. Scott was a self-employed handyman. He graduated in 1978 from Vicksburg High School and was in the Army for 12 years. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Scott Jr.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Knight and Joshua Knight, both of Vicksburg; his mother, Viola Scott of Vicksburg; a brother, Danny Scott of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sisters, Dorothy Banks of Lorman, Ethel Davis of Salinas, Calif., and Loretta Brantley of Vicksburg; nieces; nephews; and other relatives, including Daisey Mae Smith of Vicksburg and members of the Davis, Gaines and Scott families.

Felicia Wolfe

JACKSON — Felicia Wolfe died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007. She was 56.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tommie Brown and Mary Greene Brown.

Employed with St. Dominic Medical Center as a medical technologist, Ms. Wolfe was a 1968 graduate of Rosa A. Temple High School Class. She received a bachelor of science degree from Tougaloo College, a master’s degree in biology from McHarry Medical College in Memphis and a master’s degree in public health from Jackson State University.

She is survived by a son, Keith Wolfe of Vicksburg; a brother, Cecil L. Brown of Vicksburg; two sisters, Sharon Brown Judson and Natalie Brown Erves, both of Vicksburg; and other relatives, including Perla Judson of Vicksburg.
