Jonathan Tremaine Bruce

Services for Jonathan Tremaine Bruce will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Locust Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. Virdell Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 6 p.m. Sunday at Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home and Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Bruce died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, as the result of a gunshot wound. He was 21.

Mr. Bruce, a native of Vicksburg, had lived in Jackson for the past four years. He attended Vicksburg High School, where he was a member of the track and football teams.

He was a member of Mount Pisgah M.B. Church.

Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Annie Jo Smith.

He is survived by one son, Javon Bruce of Jackson; his parents, Dexter Andra “Mitchell” Smith and Betty Ann Bruce Smith, both of Jackson; two brothers, Mark Bruce of Houston, Texas, and Dexter Deandra Smith of Vicksburg; two sisters, Augustine Brown of Vicksburg and Leslie Halton of Houston; his paternal grandparents, J.T. and Hattie Smith of Vicksburg; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Ross of Jackson; and other relatives, including the Smith, Johnson, Shelby, Robinson, Davis, Cooper and Kelly families of Vicksburg.

Freddie L. Owens

MORTON — Services for Freddie L. Owens will be at 11 a.m. today at Vicksburg Auditorium with the Rev. Dellie C. Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Chapel Cemetery under the direction of W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mr. Owens died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at St. Dominic-Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was 66.

A Vicksburg native, Mr. Owens had been a resident of Morton. He had a bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University, a master’s degree from Tuskegee University and an educational specialist degree from Mississippi State University.

He taught vocational agriculture at Bettye Mae Jack High School in Morton and had retired as an agriculture instructor from the Forest-Scott County Vocational Center. He was serving as assistant state supervisor of agricultural education for the Mississippi Department of Education and was serving his fourth term as alderman for the City of Morton. He was mayor pro-tem for Morton and a member of the Morton Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Owens was a member of and deacon at Oak Chapel M.B. Church. He was past president of the Scott County Association of Educators and the Scott County Educators Federal Credit Union. He was past president and business manager of the Scott County Alcorn Alumni Association. He was past first vice president and second vice president of the ASU National Alumni Association and had served as vice chairman of the Scott County Democratic Executive Committee.

He was a life member and president of the Alcorn National Alumni Association. He had served as chairman of the Alcorn National Award Committee and was a member of the Alcorn Liaison Recruiters team and the Alcorn State University “A” Club. He received the Faithful Service Award from the ASU National Alumni in 1985, the President Club Award in 1987 and the John A. Peoples-Walter Washington Humanitarian Award in 2001.

Mr. Owens was a member of Paragon Masonic Lodge No. 7, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., East Central Planning and Development Board, the Mississippi Association of Educators, the National Education Association, the American Vocational Association, the Mississippi Vocational Association and the First Certified Municipal Officials.

He was inducted into the ASU Hall of Honor in 1995 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ora Cook Owens.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Horton Owens of Morton.

Barbara Ann Stark

LAKE CHARLES, La. — Services for Barbara Ann Stark will be at 11 a.m. today at White Chapel Church in Harvey, La.

Mrs. Stark died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, in Lake Charles, La. She was 54.

Mrs. Stark was born in Sharkey County to the late Nathaniel and Lillian Brown. She was a 1972 graduate of Rolling Fork High School. She was a former resident of Sacramento, Calif., New Orleans and Lake Charles.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sallie Mae Cole and Helen Bouie.

She is survived by a daughter, Felicia Michelle Stark; 10 sisters, Bettye Meriwhether, Gloria Valentine and Gwen Bouie, all of Sacramento, Juanita Dilbert and Ruby Ford, both of New Orleans, JoAnn McGee and Theola Lindsey, both of Cary, Ida Miller and Lillian Jones, both of Vicksburg, and Bessie Jones of Belzoni; one grandson; and other relatives and friends.

Pearlie Webber

Pearlie Webber died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 96.

Mrs. Webber was a member of Living Word Baptist Church, where she served on the mother’s board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Webber; two daughters; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Survivors include two daughters, Willie B. Bell of Vicksburg and Georgia B. Hall of Rolling Fork; 12 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Authar Mae Johnson of Rolling Fork and Alonzo Webber of Vicksburg.

Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Lettie Ann Williams

LORMAN — Lettie Ann Williams died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at her home in Lorman. She was 73.

Mrs. Williams was born in Jefferson County to America Murray and Madison Young. She was a retired manager. She was a member of Gold Mount Baptist Church in Fayette, where she served as church secretary.

She is survived by numerous relatives and friends.

Services will be at noon today at Taylor Chapel in Fayette with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Gold Mount Cemetery under the direction of Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette.
