There is a great disparity in the records in today’s second round Class 4A playoff game between Pontotoc and the Vicksburg Gators at Memorial Stadium.

Pontotoc comes in with a gaudy 24-1 record while Vicksburg is still under .500 at 9-11-2 as the teams battle in a second round contest set for 4 p.m.

Gators coach Jason Bennett says there is more to the numbers. His team has played against the likes of Class 5A powers Northwest Rankin, Clinton and Brandon along with two matches against 4A favorite Pearl — which plays Oxford in another quarterfinal today.

The Gators have also been formidable in the playoffs under Bennett. In four seasons, VHS has won seven playoff matches, including Wednesday’s 3-1 decision over Caledonia. They played for the 5A title in 2005 and made the semifinals in 2006.

“I know (Pontotoc) is 24-1 but I don’t know if they’ve played the talent we’ve played like a Northwest Rankin or Clinton. They have played Tupelo and Brandon, but that’s as much as I know right now,” Bennett said.

The Gators are coming off an interesting trip to Caledonia.

“We played a good game considering what happened to us,” Bennett said. “First, we were late because we got lost. A tornado had gone through there and had knocked down the lights at the football stadium. Caledonia uses two fields, but the main soccer field doesn’t have lights and since the lights at the football field were down, they had to bring in portable lights.

“The lights were right on us and there were a lot of shadows out there. Plus, the field was really muddy. It was an experience. We played fairly well, we just couldn’t finish. We had two balls go off the cross bar and the one goal they got late, came on a PK (penalty kick) following a hand ball,” Bennett said. “We could’ve beaten them worse, but we did score three goals.”

Patrick Parker, Ryan Ferrington and Chucky Hayden scored for the Gators. Keeper Bowen Woodson got the shutout, his second straight.

Pontotoc got two goals from Collin Burchfield to beat Lafayette County 3-0 on Wednesday in its 4A playoff opener.
