The Vicksburg Gators boys basketball team accomplished quite a bit on Tuesday night.

Jonathan Phelps scored a game-high 32 points and sophomore Kelsey Howard netted 13 as Vicksburg earned the No. 1 seed in next week’s division tournament at Lanier. The Gators would have won the championship regardless of its outcome because the Callaway Chargers upset Lanier, also on Tuesday.

Game time and opponent for the Gators’ division tournament will be announced soon.

Robinson, who guided the Gators to the 2003 Class 5A state championship, is in his 17th season as Vicksburg’s head coach. As if winning the 500th wasn’t nice enough, this afternoon he will be on hand as his son, Delmon, will sign a national letter of intent to play football at Mississippi State next season.

The Gators close out the regular season at Brandon on Friday.

Taylor Ammons scored 16 points and Alexus Stirgus added 11, but the Missy Gators managed only 16 total points in the second and third quarters combined in a division loss to Yazoo City.

Kenyatta Epps scored 18 for the Lady Indians.

The Missy Gators are set to play Brandon on Friday, then in the Division 3-4A tournament next week at Lanier.

The top four teams from each Class 4A division advance to the state tournament.
