It was a satisfying Senior Night at St. Aloysius on Tuesday.
Both the St. Al boys and girls won their regular season home finales with ease and in the process moved up a notch in the Division 6-1A standings.
Junior Alex Lanier pumped in 28 points to lead the Flashes past the Mississippi School for the Deaf 69-46. The win allows St. Al (7-15, 6-7) to move into a fifth seed in the division going into a final road game at Puckett on Friday.
“It was fun and this was pretty awesome to play this well for our seniors,” Lanier said after the 23-point win. “We ran what we call our spread and it worked pretty well for me.”
Lanier made 13 field goals, most coming off the high post and working the ball low to make his shots. He also grabbed seven rebounds, had three steals and added five assists.
Creating steals and making good passes was something the Flashes did well all night against a short-handed MSD squad that dressed just six players. St. Al had steals on 17 of MSD’s 24 turnovers. They also had a combined 23 assists. Senior Chip Donald had seven assists, most going to Lanier.
“I definitely have become more of a leader this year,” Lanier added. “I just knew we’d win tonight.”
St. Al coach Gary Miller, who came out of retirement to coach the Flashes after former coach Larry Smith resigned after seven games, was glad to close out the home season with a solid performance.
“We got to play everybody and this was a fun night for them,” Miller said. “It was our last home regular season game and we won. I’ve enjoyed being here. This has been good for me. And the kids have been super.”
St. Al took control early with a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. Lanier made four field goals while Duffy Loel and Donald, the two St. Al seniors, each knocked down a 3-pointer.
Loel had a good outing with 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and five assists. Point guard Sean Johnson, who had to fill in for the injured Jeremy Falls (out with a broken nose), had 11 points, five assists and four steals.
It was Johnson who gave the Flashes a 45-24 lead with 2:09 left in the third quarter. The lead grew to 27 at 64-37 after two baskets by Loel.
MSD was led by Antoine Allison with 24 points and eight rebounds. Dellndray Fitzgerald had 12 points.

It’s been a trying season for St. Al senior Elizabeth Mazzanti, but rewarding nonetheless. She scored 14 points in her final home game to lead the Lady Flashes (4-18, 4-9) possibly into a No. 6 seed in next week’s division tournament in Pelahatchie.
“Bittersweet. It’s my last game here, so it was kind of sad,” said Mazzanti, who has averaged nearly 15 points a game this season after being a starting point guard the previous two seasons and helping the school win 47 games.
“This has been a good experience for me because I’ve had to be a leader for a very young team. But I think they will be really good in the next couple of seasons,” she added.
Sara Howington scored eight of her nine points in the third quarter to boost St. Al to a 29-21 lead after three quarters. Mazzanti scored six in the final quarter to build a 41-28 lead. Victoria Morone led MSD with 15 points.
