Over the past decade, the Murrah Lady Mustangs girls basketball team has been the team others strive to be.
Whether it be the bevy of state championships or constant flow of college-caliber talent, Murrah has ruled girls basketball in this state.
And this year is no different.
The nationally ranked Lady Mustangs will invade Warren Central today at 6 in the final regular season game for both schools. This week Murrah earned a No. 6 national ranking by USA Today and feature LSU signee LaSondra Barrett and a wealth of rising stars.
WC coach Donny Fuller knows all about Murrah.
“We hope it prepares us for the district tournament,” said Fuller, whose team will open the Division 3-5A tournament on Tuesday at home against Provine.
With Clinton’s win over Greenville on Thursday night, the Lady Vikes get the top-seeded Lady Rams at 7 on Tuesday. Warren Central’s boys will battle University of Connecticut recruit Scotty Haralson and top-seeded Provine on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. Greenville and Clinton’s girls and boys will play each other Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.
Before then, though, the Lady Vikes will look to put an end to a recent swoon.
WC lost its last three division games handily and had its game Tuesday against Northwest Rankin canceled setting up the showdown with Murrah.
Murrah junior Tanecka Carey and Warren Central junior Sha’Kayla Caples will provide a glimpse of next year’s crop of college players. It also should bring out the college coaches.
Several Division I programs are scheduled to send coaches to Warren Central tonight.
“Murrah has a couple Dandy Dozen’s and a couple division one prospects,” Fuller said. “Yeah they are good.”
VHS-Brandon hoops canceled
Vicksburg High’s regular season finale scheduled for tonight at Brandon High has been canceled because Brandon had to make up a division game.
The Gators will begin the Division 3-4A tournament as the No. 1 seed and play on Tuesday.
The Missy Gators will play Lanier in the girls tournament opener on Monday.
