Dewey G. Barnes
CROWVILLE, La. — Dewey G. “Lucky” Barnes was born in Ardmore, Okla., on Jan. 1, 1921. He passed from this life Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Andre Barnes; and one grandson, Blake Tucker.
He is survived by one son, Dr. Dewey G. Barnes III and wife Pam; and daughters Donna and husband Dr. Mike Tucker and Carol and husband W.H. Sanders. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Dr. Dawn Pennebaker, Kristie McFarland, Dr. Mindy Williams, Kelly Kucin and Dewey G. Barnes IV; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Barnes was a decorated World War II bomber pilot, flying 30 missions in a B-17. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and was always considered a hero by everyone except himself. He continued flying after the war as a crop duster, and had resided in Crowville, La., for the last 43 years.
He was a mechanically gifted man who loved to work with wood but could fix anything that moved. A tenure at Texas A&M was cut short due to the death of his father. He never knew anything but hard work, but never complained.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bethany Worship Center in Crowville.
Mary L. Banks Carter
Services for Mary L. “May-Lou” Banks Carter will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Locust Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. Robert L. Miller Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Locust Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 until 7 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carter died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 69. Born in Warren County, Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and a member of Locust Grove M.B. Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Carter; her parents, Tyree Sr. and Mary Brown Banks; four brothers, Tyree Banks Jr., Oscar William Banks, Joseph Allen Banks and John S. Banks; and a sister, Rosetta Demby.
Survivors include two sons, Adam D. Carter of Monroe and David G. Carter of Vicksburg; four daughters, Shirley Banks Allen and Pamela Banks Jackson, both of Vicksburg, and Mary Banks Satterfield and Angela Banks McWilliams, both of Las Vegas; one brother, Paul Banks Sr. of Vicksburg; five sisters, Maggie Banks Thomas and Kathleen Dimbly, both of Vicksburg, Kathryn Banks Cummings and Gladys Banks Hurens, both of Jackson, and Frances Banks Norwood of Terry; two stepsons, Vance William Carter of Vicksburg and Daniel Carter of Chicago; one stepdaughter, Diane Carter of Chicago; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives, including members of the Banks, Brown, Carter, Blackmore, Prentiss and Erwin families.
Thomas Sidney Cates
MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Thomas Sidney “Tom” Cates, 80, of Turnberry Lane, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at the Gordon Hospice House.
Born May 5, 1927, in Jackson, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Mildred Lewis Cates. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and then graduated from Mississippi State, where he was affiliated with Sigma Chi fraternity. He was a member of the Professional Engineers and a founding member of the Calidonia Pipe Band.
Tom was an Eagle Scout and a Scout Master in Atlanta. He retired as a civil engineer from Southern Bell. He was a member and commodore of the Lake Norman Yacht Club. Tom was an avid hunter, sharp shooter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Sports Car Club of America.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Helen Jolly Cates; children, Sidney Jenkins and husband Danny and William “Bill” Cates and wife Susan Porter, all of Charlotte, N.C., and Pamela Dillon and husband John of Cornelius, N.C.; grandchildren, Catie, Brandt, Wynne and Maggie; and stepgrandchildren, Colin, Meredith, Lindsay and Savanna.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville, N.C.

Alex Harris
MAYERSVILLE — Alex Harris died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at his home in Mayersville. He was 76.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Annie Harris of Mayersville; three sons, Alex Harris, Tommy Harris and Victor Harris, all of Chicago; four daughters, Theresa Lulian of Memphis, Jackie Burgest of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Janice Jones and Quintina Daily, both of Chicago; two brothers, Clifton Harris of Onward and James Harris of Gary, Ind.; one sister, Velma Brooks of Vicksburg; and 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel M.B. Church in Mayersville with Pastor Obadiahi Hall officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Rosie Washington Johnson
GREENVILLE — Rosie Washington Johnson died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. She was 97.
Survivors include a goddaughter, Mary Ann Johnson; and cousins, Candy Henderson and Richard Jones, both of Greenville.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Valley M.B. Church in Vickland with the Rev. R.L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Rolling Fork.
Teackle Wallis Martin
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Teackle Wallis Martin, retired mechanical engineer, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at the NHC Health Care Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
He was born in 1921 in Vicksburg, son of J.G. and Helen Virginia Wallis Martin.
Mr. Martin studied at The Citadel and graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He worked on Fort Loudon dam and was drafted to work on the Calutron at Y-12 in Oak Ridge during World War II.
Mr. Martin worked with the Corps of Engineers at Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg from 1947 until 1951. He returned to Oak Ridge in 1951 to work with ORAU (ORINS) as director of technical services until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Martin loved his house projects, gardening, boating and an old Packard collection.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patty Prigmore Martin; daughter, Virginia Jane Martin, and second wife, Rubilee Harmon Martin.
He is survived by sons, Leonard Martin, D.D.S., of Oak Ridge and Teackle Martin Jr,. M.D., and wife Anne of Washington State; granddaughter, Heather Pratt and husband Jason of Washington; grandsons, James Wallis Martin of Washington and Joseph Gaillard Martin of Hawaii.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge with the Rev. Dr. Craig Kallio and the Rev. Bailey Norman officiating. Graveside services will follow Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Nation, rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity officiating. Visitation will be at Riles Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service at Cedar Hill.
Annie Prentiss
Services for Annie Prentiss will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at King David M.B. Church No. 1 with the Rev. A.L. Hines officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 6 tonight at Williams Funeral Service.
Mrs. Prentiss died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Promise Hospital of Vicksburg. She was 91.
Mrs. Prentiss was a member of King David M.B. Church No. 1.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Prentiss Gaskin and Alfred Gaskin; and a son, Phillip Jones.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Young and Maxine Stephen, both of Detroit; two brothers, Alfred Gaskin and Jessie Gaskin, both of Detroit, and Elijah Gaskin of Gary, Ind.; six granddaughters, four great-grandchildren; and other friends and relatives.
Claudia Ross
Services for Claudia “Red” Ross will be at noon Sunday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Ross died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 84.
Mrs. Ross was a member of King David No. 2 M.B. Church. She retired as a cook from Beechwood Restaurant and Lounge and Ramada Inn.
Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by a son, Norman Staples Jr.; and siblings, Clinton Ross, Rosie Lee Claybon, Erma Martin, Joseph Ross, Emmitt Ross, Clifford Ross, L.C. Ross, General Ross, Bernice Ross and Bertha Ross.
She is survived by four sons, Johnny Staples of Yazoo City, Amos Ross of Germany, Shefrie Staples of Las Vegas and Curtis B. Ross of Vicksburg; three daughters, Brenda Joyce Ross of San Bernardino, Calif., Felicia Ann George of Texas and Catherine Stewart of Jackson; two brothers, James Ross and Elijah Ross, both of Detroit; 48 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Lillie White Stevens
UTICA — Lillie White Stevens died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Manhatten Health Care Center in Jackson. She was 98.
Miss Stevens was a lifelong resident of Utica. She was born Oct. 2, 1909. In 1929, she graduated valedictorian of her Utica High School class. She never married but devoted her life to caring for her family, which included her parents, brother, twin sister, brother-in-law and nephew. “Auntie” as she was lovingly called by her family will be remembered for her strong Christian faith and her unselfish caring for others.
Miss Stevens was preceded in death by her parents, John Augustas Stevens and Rosa Lee Robison Stevens; a brother, Samuel Leonard Stevens; her twin sister, Rosa Lee Stevens Hall; and her brother-in-law, Hiram Jackson Hall.
Survivors include one nephew, John Thomas and wife Marie Hall of Raymond; three great-nephews, Steve Hall and children, Brianna and Austin, all of Mobile; Jeffery Hall and daughter Mackenzie of Utica; Ryan and Shannon Hall, and children Aiden and Emily of Utica.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel in Utica with the Rev. Ken Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Robison Cemetery in Utica. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 this evening at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel in Utica.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Roberts, Van Rigby, Pete Cranfield, James Pace, John White and Frank White.
Bettie Jean Bishop Thomas
Services for Bettie Jean Bishop Thomas will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ludwig Joseph Jessup officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Rosary will be from 5 until 6 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thomas died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at her home. She was 76.
A homemaker, Mrs. Thomas was a native of Warren County. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Sodality. She retired as a cafeteria worker from Vicksburg High School after 16 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Thomas; her parents, Samuel and Helen Lee Bishop; and a sister, Dorothy Bishop-Fisher.
She is survived by one son, Cornel Thomas of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Leonette Thomas of Vicksburg; and three grandchildren.
