Gators gain division victory over Canton|[03/01/08]

The Vicksburg Gators played well enough to break a two-game losing streak Friday night.

How they did it was a little less pleasing for coach Jamie Creel.

The Gators committed four errors and nearly let Canton back into the game before scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to beat Canton 13-3 at Bazinsky Field. The errors brought the Gators’ total to 12 in their last three games.

“We’re not doing very well defensively. We’re going to have to pick it up on that,” Creel said. “A lot of it is reaction. You’re thinking about what you’re doing instead of just getting it and throwing it to first.”

This time, at least, the errors didn’t cost Vicksburg (3-2, 1-1 Division 3-4A) a win.

Kurt Cooksey went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Trey Prentiss tripled and drove in three runs, and Bowen Woodson hit a solo homer. Andrew Brown and Blake Tarnabine combined on a five-inning no-hitter, with only one walk allowed between them.

The Gators scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. Cooksey’s RBI double and an RBI single from Prentiss keyed the rally.

Canton (2-2, 1-1) came back to score three runs — without a hit — in the fourth. Leadoff hitter Simon Collier reached second base on a throwing error. Damion Brown followed with a grounder to short, but Vicksburg’s Woodson tried to cut down Collier at third and threw the ball into the dugout, allowing Collier to score. Brown went to second on the error, reached third on another error, and scored on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Marvel Wilson brought in another run, making it 6-3.

Vicksburg didn’t take long to answer, though. Woodson atoned for his mistake by hitting a leadoff homer to left-center in the fourth. Doubles by Brian Fitzgerald and Cooksey brought in another run, and Prentiss made it 10-3 by hitting an RBI triple and later scoring on a throwing error. Four straight walks, a hit batter, two wild pitches and a balk brought in the last three runs.

Canton finally got out of the inning when Sam Hawkins — the Tigers’ third pitcher of the inning — got Stanton Price to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Tarnabine then retired the side in the fifth to finish the game.

“We played with a little more intensity in the last inning, but we’ve got to come out firing early,” Creel said. “We were out in front of everything. That guy (Canton starter Andre Johnson) is a good pitcher and he had us on our heels the first couple innings.”

WC 15, Provine 3

Jason Pettway homered and had four RBIs, Harry Ferguson had a pair of doubles and three RBIs, and Warren Central completed a season sweep of Provine with another rout. The Vikings outscored Provine 42-4 in two games this week.

Dustin Hardin went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs for the Vikings (2-3, 2-0 Division 3-5A), and Adam Lee was 2-for-5 with a home run.

Warren Central will host Ridgeland today at 7 p.m.
