Warren Central baseball coach Randy Broome has seen his team lose its fair share of games in which the Vikings had the lead.
Late Saturday night, the tables finally turned for the Vikings.
Warren Central (3-3) scored 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined and overcame a 12-3 deficit in beating a stout Class 4A Ridgeland team 14-12.
“It’s like we always tell them, if you put the ball in play, something will happen,” said Broome after the nearly four-hour game at Viking Field. “Even when we were down 12-3, everyone was still in the game. When we started to put the ball in play, things happened.”
Trailing by nine in the bottom of the fifth, Warren Central scored four in the fifth, then tallied seven runs in the bottom of the sixth. WC had 11 hits and took advantage of eight Ridgeland errors.
A groundout to Jimmie Elliott at second base ended the game, WC’s third straight victory.
“This is a huge win for us because we never said die,” Broome said. “We found out what we needed to do. This team never quit.”
Colby Key came on in relief to earn the victory and Jason Pettway recorded his first save of the season. Heath Carroll, Dustin Hardin and Jimmie Elliott each had two singles for Warren Central.
Warren Central, which beat Provine twice last week to grab a 2-0 record in Division 3-5A, is scheduled to travel to Greenville-Weston on Tuesday, then host the Hornets on Friday night at 7.
In other baseball games on Saturday, Carroll Academy scored three times in the top of the seventh to beat Porters Chapel Academy 5-3.
Clayton Holmes had three hits, Colby Rushing tripled and Josh Hill homered in the loss.
At Clinton, Vicksburg (5-3) scored six runs over the final three innings to erase a 2-0 lead and win 6-2.
