Visitation was held Friday at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Jackson. Visitation will also be held today at Baldwin Lee from 11 until 1, with the funeral to follow at Balwin-Lee Chapel at 1. Burial will be at the Wesson City Cemetery in Wesson.

Mrs. Perritt was born Oct. 4, 1942, in Utica to Richard and Beulah Way. She attended Vicksburg and Greenwood schools as a young girl. Later, after graduating from Greenwood High School, she attended Mississippi College where she earned her bachelor of science and master’s degree in education. In 2000, she was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in the Education Department at MC.

A teacher for 25 years, she served at schools in both Georgia and Mississippi. Most of Mrs. Perritt’s teaching years were spent at Timberlawn Elementary School, where she touched many students’ lives. Through her years of teaching, she was recognized and honored for her work in the field of education. One of her passions for students was that of character education. She felt blessed that one of her dreams came true by publishing a book entitled “STAR Guides” which is used in many schools today to promote character development in children. After retirement, she served as a mentor to first-year teachers in Jackson Public Schools.

Mrs. Prewitt loved to travel, read and spend time with her husband and family. Another great source of pleasure for her was spending time with her grandchildren, who she loved dearly and brought great meaning and purpose to her life. She was a member of Flora United Methodist Church.

A ray of sunshine to all she met, “Mimi” was an uplifting inspiration to all she knew, and her positive spirit would quickly fill a room. She was a wonderful model for unselfishness and caring. Known for her letter writing, her words have meant a great deal to many people. Quick with a smile and a hug, her presence will be greatly missed.

On this day, we celebrate her life for the legacy of love, hope and support she gave. Her strong faith will continue to inspire us forever.

Mrs. Perritt is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Beulah Way; sister, Betty Way; and brother, Anthony Way.

She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, John Perritt of Flora; daughter and son-in-law, Chandra and Eric Hays of Flora; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Michelle Perrit of Flora; grandchildren, Marybeth Lane, Trace Lane, Harrison Hays and Anna Cate Hays, all of Vicksburg; brothers, sisters and their spouses, Dixie and Richard Kelly, Barbara Pace, Wren and Debbie Way, and Richard C.
