Dorothy Taylor Barnett
Dorothy Taylor Barnett, 88, formerly of Cleveland, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Promise Hospital in Vicksburg. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Ray Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Williamson and Mrs. Barnett’s son, the Rev. Donald Barnett, officiating. Burial will follow at Merigold Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Barnett was born Sept. 11, 1919, to Bolen Benjamin Taylor and Ellen Frances Leflore Taylor. She married Kenneth Vince Barnett. She worked for many years at Baxter and Color Tile before moving to Hernando to open a grocery store. She moved to Vicksburg in 1994. She loved to do hand work and loved her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Vince Barnett in 1985; and her parents, Bolen and Ellen Taylor.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. Donald K. Barnett (Elizabeth) of Kevil, Ky., and Ronald Charles Barnett of Cleveland; four daughters, Toby Barnett Mitchell of Merigold, Faye Barnett Cowart and Mary Barnett White, both of Vicksburg, and Suzanne Barnett Kincaid (Brian) of Anthem, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
A special thank you goes to Dr. Walter Johnston, Kirk Harper, the nursing staff of Promise Hospital in Vicksburg, Peggy Lawrence, Alex Neal, Dorothy January and Patricia Brown.
Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children’s Village.
Willie Henry Bunch
Willie Henry Bunch died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Covenant Health and Rehab of Vicksburg. He was 90.
Mr. Bunch was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He had retired from Anderson-Tully and retired as a custodian at Warren Central High School.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Davis Bunch; one daughter, Augustine Shelly; his parents, Cornell “Sugar” Bunch and Rosa Gravin, and parents who raised him, Ollie and Monroe Johnson; one sister, Catherine Fountroly; and a goddaughter, Deleslie Caples.
Survivors include two sons, Gregory Bunch of Oakland, Calif., and Terry Lee Wright of Atlanta; two daughters, Suvella Bunch of San Bernardino, Calif., and Jenene Wright Boyd of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including goddaughter Monica Shorter of Vicksburg; Michael Caples of Nashville; and Minister Barbara Ann Caples Roberts of San Antonio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Jessing officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 until 7 tonight at Williams Funeral Home with rosary at 6 p.m.
Idella Lewis
KANKAKEE, Ill. — Idella Lewis died Friday, March 28, 2008, at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee,Ill. She was 79.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Leflore County to Abiah Singleton and Arthur Crumps. She was a homemaker and a member of Green Chapel M.B. Church in Rolling Fork.
She was preceded in death by three children, including George Edward Lewis.
She is survived by her husband, George Lewis; five sons, Eddie Lewis of Rolling Fork, Willie Lewis of Chicago, James Hunter of Kankakee and Floyd Polk and Edward Polk, both of Cleveland; one daughter, Carolyn Clark of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, John Rhodes of Rolling Fork; two sisters, Carrie McGee of Chicago and Marie Myles of Rolling Fork; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Green Chapel M.B. Church with the Rev. Charles Caesar officiating. Burial will follow at Green Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Lucendia M. McGriggs
UTICA — Lucendia M. McGriggs died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Vicksburg Convalescent Home. She was 92.
Mrs. McGriggs was a member of St. Paul M.B. Church in Utica.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, James George McGriggs.
She is survived by her caregiver, Bessie Dorsey of Port Gibson; two adopted sons, Melvin Harris of Jackson and Darren Wroten of Dayton, Ohio; and other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul M.B. Church with the Rev. Charles Harper officiating. Burial will follow at Seven Star Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 until 5 today at Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson and Saturday at the church from noon until the service.
Mary Helen Odems
ROLLING FORK — Mary Helen Odems died Friday, March 28, 2008, in Richmond, Va. She was 37.
Mrs. Odems was a Rolling Fork resident. She was a nurse’s assistant.
She is survived by her mother, Lee Bertha Odems of Rolling Fork; one son, Ledarius Odems of Rolling Fork; five brothers, Wiley Odems, Eugene Odems, Daren Odems, Lorenzo Odems and Harvey Odems, all of Rolling Fork; and three sisters, Brenda Odems and Sandra Odems, both of Rolling Fork, and Janice Odems of Greenville.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with Pastor Elijah Eason officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in Mayersville.
Visitation will be from 5 until 6 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
Marjorie S. Scott
Marjorie S. Scott died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 80.
A native of Shreveport, La., Mrs. Scott was the daughter of the late Perry H. and Ethel Bixby Simpson. She moved to Vicksburg in 1939. She worked for Pete Nosser Jr. at Jitney No. 1 on South Street and at Westinghouse for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John David Scott; a daughter, Rexine Weeks; one sister, Winona Muirhead; a brother, John Simpson; and a granddaughter, Rachel Sanders Clark.
Mrs. Scott is survived by two daughters, Linda Redditt and Diane Barrentine, both of Vicksburg; one son, Donald Mee of Ellisville; a sister, Betty Simpson Baskin of New Jersey; three brothers, Floyd Simpson of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Perry Simpson and Harold Simpson, both of Vicksburg; eight grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Conrad officiating. Burial will follow at Redbone Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon Saturday until the service.
Pallbearers will be Rickey Redditt, Shane Redditt, Daniel Barrentine, Allen Brown, John Wesley Barrentine and Casey Weeks.
Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Muirhead, Joe Scott, Johnny Sanders, Dean Weeks, Charles Sanders and Dr. Paul Pierce.
Andrew James Wilson
EDWARDS — Services for Andrew James “A.J.” Wilson will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul M.B. Church in Edwards. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Funeral Home in Vicksburg.
Mr. Wilson died Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was 74.
Formerly of Edwards, Mr. Wilson was a Clinton resident. He was born in Hinds County to the late John and Claudia Boyd Wilson. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Laborers’ International Union AFL-CIO Local No. 145.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Oscar Wilson Sr., J.W. Wilson and Lillian Kyles.
He is survived by four daughters, Elver L. Moore of Edwards, Julia Sims of Bolton, Jacqueline Thomas of Grace and Mary Claudia Randall of Byram; four sons, Curtis Wilson of Edwards, John Wilson of Clinton, and Jeremiah Shelby and Earl Wilson, both of Jackson; two sisters, Victoria Wilson-Bush and Relia Turner, both of Edwards; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
