The first of five trials for five Vicksburg men, four of them brothers, accused of tracking down and killing a 25-year-old because they didn’t like something he said last summer began Monday in Warren County Circuit Court.
The prosecution says a sawed-off shotgun and an AK-47 rifle were used to kill Justin Maurice Harris in a home at 1224 Grammar St. early on the morning of June 17.
Jurors were seated to hear the murder indictment against Anthony Trevillion, 30.
The others charged who asked for and won separate trials are three of his brothers, Alonzo Trevillion, 35, Armond Trevillion, 28 and Matthew Nash, 29. The fifth person indicted was Rufus Armstrong, 32.
In addition to murder, charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling, two counts of aggravated assault and possessing weapons after a felony conviction will be weighed by jurors.
Anthony and Armond Trevillion, along with two other men, were indicted after a double homicide 12 years ago. Nathan Carson Jr., 26, and Frederick Freeman, 19, were shot to death Aug. 18, 1996, outside the former River City Cabaret at Mulberry and Levee streets when Armond was 16 and Anthony, 19. In that case, another defendant said he did the shooting and the Tre-villions served aggravated assault sentences.
In his opening statement, Assistant District Attorney Dewey Arthur said Harris had gone to the Grammar Street home about 3 a.m. from a now defunct downtown nightclub on Grove Street when multiple shots were fired, one of which struck him in the left side. An argument over a woman apparently had taken place earlier.
Arthur told jurors two other men, Jarvis Bowman, 25, who is Harris’ brother, and Garrod Bunch, 22, were also in the home at the time, but neither was hit.
He also noted the police gathered 19 used rounds of ammunition outside and inside the home.
District Attorney Ricky Smith said the prosecution would call about eight witnesses, including police officers, Bowman, Bunch and a neighbor who saw the men walk up to the house that night before they opened fire.
The defense, led by Jerry Campbell of Vicksburg, reserved its opening statement and is not expected to have anyone other than the defendant take the stand.
While testifying at a preliminary hearing March 6, Vicksburg Police Sgt. Sandra Johnson Williams, lead investigator, said that during an interrogation, Matthew Nash said Anthony Trevillion was one of two who did the actual shooting. The other, he said was Armond. One reportedly used a sawed-off shotgun and the other an AK-47 assault rifle.
Murder indictments from the January grand jury are also pending against Herman Green, 23, and Jason Jeobari Davis. Green is accused of shooting to death 19-year-old William Wade on May 27 and Davis, 22 of shooting to death 21-year-old Thaddeus Jeffrey on Sept. 2.
