SidelinesMissy Gators win North State meetJunior sprinter Briana Jones won three events, and Vicksburg High got strong performances up and down the lineup to win the Class 4A North State track meet Saturday in Oxford.

Jones won the long jump, 100 meters and 200 meters to help the Missy Gators edge Oxford for the team title, 78.5-76. Vicksburg placed in the top four in nine events and will send a strong contingent to Friday’s state meet at Pearl High School. The field events will begin at 2 p.m. and the running events at 5:30.

Vicksburg was third in the Class 5A meet last year.

“We won in nine events. If we go over and take care of business in nine events Friday, it’ll be either state champions or runner-ups,” Vicksburg coach Deborah Brown said.

Jones won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 4 inches, the 100 meters in 12.20 seconds, and the 200 meters in 24.93 seconds. Along with Kina Hasain, Jasmine Walker and Kamiko Martin, Jones was also part of the 800 meter relay team that finished second in 1 minute, 45.88 seconds. Vicksburg was also second in the 1,600 meter relay, as the team of Meredith Stirgus, Kourtney Jones, Martin and Kameesa Smith finished in 4:14.37.

Hasain was second in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles, in 16.11 and 48.67 seconds, respectively. Stirgus was third in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 1:01.79.
