Culminating a years-long investigation, a former Clear Creek Golf Club employee has been indicted for embezzlement.

Deberine Ford, 58, 118 Azalea Lane, had been a cashier at the facility, owned by Warren County, for 15 years.

The Mississippi Department of Audit began investigating in September 2005 when a Warren County administrator reported that Ford had not been depositing all the cash collected from membership and golf fees. She was suspended without pay in October 2006.

The case was presented to the May term of the Warren County Grand Jury last week by state prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office. The Department of Audit does not have prosecution authority.

Ford was arraigned Friday and was freed on a $2,500 bond, said Chief Deputy Jay McKenzie of the Warren County Sheriff’s Department.

The amount of money and the method involved was not released. A trial date has been set for Dec. 8, said Warren County Prosecuting Attorney Ricky Johnson, who will be handling the case.

Travis T. Vance Jr. had been Ford’s lawyer in 2006. He was unavailable Friday afternoon, and a woman who answered the phone at his law office said she could not confirm if Vance is Ford’s lawyer.

Clear Creek Golf Club, 1260 Tiffentown Road, falls under the management of the Warren County Parks and Recreation Commission.

No one at the commission was available for comment.
